Stripe has agreed to acquire OpenRouter, an AI model gateway and routing platform. The deal marks a major expansion of Stripe’s strategy around AI infrastructure and token-based computing.
The companies have not disclosed the purchase price. However, The New York Times reported a $7.5 billion valuation for the transaction. Reuters separately reported that a source familiar with the deal put its value slightly above $8 billion.
The transaction remains subject to customary closing conditions. Meanwhile, OpenRouter expects the deal to close within the coming weeks.
OpenRouter Routes AI Work Across Models
OpenRouter provides a single interface for accessing hundreds of AI models. The platform currently supports more than 400 models from over 80 providers.
Moreover, OpenRouter helps businesses select models based on price, speed, reliability and task requirements. This allows companies to route different requests to different models as conditions change.
The platform has grown rapidly since its founding in 2023. OpenRouter says it now serves more than 10 million developers and companies while processing over 10 trillion tokens each day.
Consequently, the company has become an important layer between businesses and AI model providers. Its customers include major technology companies such as NVIDIA, Zoom and Lovable.
OpenRouter also raised $113 million in May. CapitalG, Alphabet’s independent growth fund, led that round. Menlo Ventures and Andreessen Horowitz are among its other major backers.
Stripe Targets AI Token Economics
Stripe has spent the past year building infrastructure around AI-related payments and usage. Its Token Billing product helps companies track AI model consumption and manage token-based costs.
However, Stripe sees a wider opportunity in managing how businesses consume AI. Companies increasingly face different prices, capabilities and performance levels across models. Therefore, choosing the right model for each request can directly affect operating costs.
Patrick Collison, cofounder and CEO of Stripe, said: “Tokens are the central currency for companies building with AI, and it’s clear that the real-world economic potential will depend on making good use of scarce compute resources.”
OpenRouter can therefore extend Stripe’s role beyond billing. The platform can help businesses decide which model should handle each request before Stripe manages the associated financial layer.
Stripe says the combined platform could help businesses improve revenue while controlling AI infrastructure costs. At the same time, OpenRouter brings model routing and observability into Stripe’s broader financial infrastructure.
Multi-Model AI Becomes Central to Enterprise Strategy
OpenRouter argues that businesses will increasingly use multiple AI models rather than depend on one provider. Its routing layer reflects that view by giving developers access to different models through one system.
Alex Atallah, cofounder and CEO of OpenRouter, said: “We believe intelligence will be multi-model: no single model will be optimal for every task, and developers need a neutral layer to orchestrate and manage them all.”
The acquisition also arrives as corporate AI usage grows rapidly. A Deloitte report cited by Reuters found that most surveyed companies with annual revenue of at least $500 million expect to consume more than 10 billion tokens each month by 2028.
Meanwhile, Stripe continues to expand its broader AI strategy. The company processed $1.9 trillion in payment volume for businesses in 2025, representing a 34% increase from the previous year.
For OpenRouter, the deal provides access to Stripe’s global customer network and infrastructure. For Stripe, it adds a major AI orchestration layer as businesses become more dependent on multiple models and rising inference costs.
OpenRouter says its product, mission and roadmap will remain unchanged after the transaction. Therefore, existing customers can continue using the platform while the companies work toward completing the acquisition.
