OpenAI Launches ChatGPT Workspace Agents to Automate Team Workflows

OpenAI introduced workspace agents in ChatGPT, marking a new step in automating complex workflows for enterprise teams. Notably, these cloud-based tools rely on Codex technology and represent what the company calls “an evolution of GPTs.”

Moreover, the feature is available immediately as a research preview for Business, Enterprise, Edu, and Teachers plans. As a result, organizations can begin experimenting with advanced automation without delay. At the same time, this launch signals a broader push toward integrating AI more deeply into workplace operations.

Replacing Custom GPTs with Smarter Automation

Workspace agents are designed to replace custom GPTs introduced last year, and they offer more advanced, persistent functionality. In particular, they operate continuously in the cloud and integrate more deeply with workplace tools. “Teams can now create shared agents that handle complex tasks and long-running workflows, all while operating within the permissions and controls set by their organization,” OpenAI said in its announcement.

Furthermore, these agents can prepare reports, write code, and respond to messages across platforms like ChatGPT and Slack. Because they run in the cloud, they continue working even when users go offline. Consequently, teams can build an agent once, share it widely, and refine it over time.

In addition, the agents can collect data from multiple systems, follow team protocols, and request approvals when required. Meanwhile, administrators can define permissions and control access to tools for different user groups. A Compliance API also enables monitoring of configurations and operations, which strengthens oversight and governance.

Expanding Enterprise AI Strategy

The workspace agents feature will remain free until May 6, 2026, and afterward, credit-based pricing will apply. However, the company plans to introduce automatic triggers, improved dashboards, and broader integrations in the future. Additionally, users will eventually be able to convert existing custom GPTs into workspace agents.

At the same time, this launch builds on a series of recent updates to Codex capabilities. For example, a major release in April added computer use on macOS, an in-app browser, image generation, and persistent memory. It also included more than 90 plugins supporting tools such as Jira, Microsoft 365, Notion, and HubSpot.

Earlier in the month, the company introduced pay-as-you-go pricing for Codex-only seats, which lowered the barrier for teams to test the technology. Therefore, the introduction of workspace agents highlights a clear focus on enterprise adoption. Ultimately, this move reinforces the view that agentic AI will play a central role in future growth.
