ChatGPT Ads has reached a $1 billion annualized revenue run rate as adoption continues to grow. Moreover, the advertising business is expanding into several international markets.

The company began testing advertisements in ChatGPT in the United States earlier this year. Since then, it has attracted more advertisers and gradually entered additional regions. Advertising could also support wider revenue growth before a potential initial public offering.

Ads Manager Expands Globally

Starting Monday, advertisers across India, Europe, the Middle East and North Africa can purchase ChatGPT ads directly through Ads Manager. Previously, the platform offered the tool only in the United States.

Additionally, Ads Manager has attracted many small and medium-sized businesses. These businesses now represent a “material share” of the advertising operation. Meanwhile, advertisers outside the United States contribute a growing portion of revenue, although the company provided no figures.

ChatGPT currently displays advertisements to users on its free tier and lower-priced Go plan. In April, the U.S. advertising pilot crossed a $100 million annualized revenue rate within six weeks. Therefore, the latest milestone indicates rapid growth over a relatively short period.

However, annualized revenue run rate does not represent confirmed yearly revenue. Instead, it estimates annual performance based on the current revenue pace.

Revenue Target Raises Questions

Emarketer AI analyst Nate Elliott said the announcement was “incredibly impressive and terribly disappointing,” as the $1 billion annualized revenue run rate suggests OpenAI is falling well short of its $2.5 billion advertising revenue target for 2026.

Although the milestone demonstrates strong momentum, it remains below the reported 2026 target. Consequently, the advertising operation may need faster growth during the remaining months.

Furthermore, competing in digital advertising means challenging Google and Facebook parent Meta. Both companies generate hundreds of billions of dollars in advertising revenue each year. Nevertheless, ChatGPT’s large user base could help it attract brands seeking new audiences and advertising formats.

The company also confidentially filed for a U.S. initial public offering earlier this year. Reportedly, it could enter public markets in 2027 or sooner. As a result, continued advertising growth may become increasingly important to investors evaluating its future revenue strategy.
