Standard Chartered Launches Institutional Bitcoin and Ether Trading in UAE

Standard Chartered cryptocurrency trading launch

Standard Chartered has launched institutional spot trading for Bitcoin and Ether in the UAE. Consequently, it becomes the first Global Systemically Important Bank to offer this capability in the market.

The service operates through Standard Chartered DIFC and expands the bank’s regulated digital asset services. Previously, its UAE offering focused mainly on custody.

Trading Through Existing Banking Platforms

Eligible institutional clients can trade deliverable Bitcoin against the US dollar and Ether against the US dollar. Moreover, they can access both options through the bank’s electronic trading channels.

The bank has integrated cryptocurrency trading into its existing platforms. Therefore, clients can place digital asset trades through familiar foreign exchange interfaces.

Additionally, clients can settle trades with a custodian of their choice. They may also use Standard Chartered’s digital asset custody service, which launched in September 2024.

As a result, institutional investors can combine trade execution and asset custody within a regulated banking environment. The service also provides stronger governance and connectivity for digital asset participation.

Digital Asset Services Expand Beyond the UK

Standard Chartered first introduced institutional Bitcoin and Ether spot trading through its UK branch in July 2025. At that time, it became the first G-SIB to provide deliverable spot cryptocurrency trading to institutional clients.

Now, the UAE launch extends the same capability into another regulated financial market. Moreover, it strengthens the bank’s expanding digital asset presence across the region.

Standard Chartered’s broader strategy covers cryptocurrency custody, trading and tokenisation through its Corporate and Investment Bank. Furthermore, its ventures ecosystem supports these capabilities through Zodia Markets and Libeara.

Regulated Infrastructure for Institutional Clients

The launch uses DIFC as a regulated base for providing institutional digital asset services. Consequently, the bank can combine its global network with regional market access.

The offering connects cryptocurrency trading with secure custody and established governance systems. Additionally, it allows clients to use regulated infrastructure without moving to unfamiliar trading interfaces.

Overall, the service gives eligible institutions a more integrated way to trade and hold Bitcoin and Ether. It also brings execution, settlement and custody together within an established international banking ecosystem.
