Anthropic has launched new blueprints that help retailers build AI shopping and merchant agents with Claude. The company announced the initiative on September 2, 2026, ahead of the holiday shopping season.
The move comes as retailers increasingly explore conversational AI for product discovery, recommendations, and commerce operations. Meanwhile, shoppers are using AI tools to compare prices, assess product availability, and find suitable products.
Claude Blueprints Target Shopping and Merchant Agents
Anthropic’s blueprint includes reference implementations for two types of agents. First, a shopping agent can help customers search for products using natural language. It can then compare options, provide recommendations, and add selected products to a shopping cart.
Second, a merchant agent supports retailers with operational decisions. For example, it can provide suggestions involving inventory, pricing, and marketing campaigns. However, the merchant agent does not complete purchases for shoppers or merchants.
The blueprint targets several industries beyond retail. These include travel, telecommunications, and ticketing platforms. Furthermore, Anthropic says teams can adapt the implementations to their own catalogs, policies, and brand requirements.
The package includes the necessary agent patterns, harnesses, and guardrails. It also includes a Claude Code plugin to help engineering teams get started with development. Therefore, companies can use the framework as a starting point rather than building an agent architecture entirely from scratch.
Retailers Look to AI Before Holiday Demand
The timing reflects growing interest in AI-assisted commerce ahead of the holiday shopping period. According to Adobe Analytics, AI-driven retail site visits converted at a rate 60% higher than traffic from other sources in the period cited by Reuters.
Anthropic also reported early results from retailers using shopping agents on Claude. “We’ve seen encouraging results cart size up about 30–35% for one partner, and customers [are] about 60% more likely to complete a purchase,” said Angela Jiang, Anthropic’s head of product on its Claude platform.
These figures indicate why retailers are testing conversational interfaces alongside traditional search and shopping tools. In addition, Anthropic says retailers running shopping agents on Claude have seen cart sizes increase by as much as 35%, while shoppers are 60% more likely to complete purchases.
However, the approach still leaves purchasing authority with the customer. The shopping agent can add products to a cart, while the merchant agent focuses on recommendations and operational support. Consequently, retailers retain control over checkout and key commercial decisions.
Deployment Across Major Cloud Platforms
Retailers can deploy the blueprints through several existing Claude environments. These include the Claude API, Amazon Bedrock, Microsoft Foundry, and Google Cloud Vertex AI.
Anthropic has also partnered with technology and consulting firms to support adoption. Its ecosystem partners include Accenture, Mastercard, and Visa. These companies are working with Anthropic to help clients and merchant communities use the new blueprints.
The company has made the blueprint available immediately, with demonstrations covering each supported vertical. Moreover, Anthropic says the release is designed to help engineering teams move toward production deployments within weeks.
As AI agents become more involved in product discovery and purchasing journeys, retailers face growing pressure to adapt their digital storefronts. Anthropic’s latest release, therefore, gives companies a structured path to experiment with agent-led commerce before the holiday shopping rush.
