Gemini Live Adds Real-Time Translation Features
Google is expanding Gemini Live with real-time conversation translation on Android. The update also introduces a refreshed interface and simpler controls for live sessions.
The feature is currently rolling out gradually. Therefore, some Android users may receive the redesigned interface before translation becomes available. The rollout appears to happen through a server-side update rather than a single app release.
The addition builds on Google’s broader push toward natural, multilingual voice interactions. Earlier this year, Google introduced Gemini 3.5 Live Translate for near-real-time speech-to-speech translation across more than 70 languages.
Live Translation Comes to Gemini
The new Gemini Live option appears inside the voice settings menu. Users can select “Turn on live translation” to enable translation during conversations.
Once enabled, Gemini can translate spoken statements as a conversation continues. For example, testing showed Hindi speech being translated into English while captions appeared on screen.
Moreover, the feature could help users communicate without repeatedly switching between separate translation tools. It may also prove useful during travel, multilingual meetings, and everyday conversations.
Google’s existing Live Translate technology already supports automatic language detection. In addition, Gemini 3.5 Live Translate can process speech continuously instead of waiting for each speaker to finish.
The technology also aims to preserve elements of natural speech. Specifically, Google’s latest audio model retains intonation, pacing, and pitch during translation.
Refreshed Gemini Live Interface
Alongside translation, Google is making several smaller changes to the Gemini Live interface. The keyboard button used to leave a Live session has reportedly been replaced by a clearer X button.
This change should make exiting a session more obvious. Meanwhile, the familiar “Live with Gemini” label has disappeared from the interface. A new “Tap to interrupt” control now provides a direct way to stop the ongoing session.
The changes follow Google’s wider redesign of the Gemini Android app. However, the latest Live adjustments focus more heavily on usability than visual changes.
Google has increasingly positioned Gemini Live as a hands-free assistant for more complex tasks. Recently, the company added productivity capabilities involving Personal Intelligence, Daily Brief, Spark, and hands-free inbox management.
Gradual Rollout Expands Gemini’s Reach
For now, availability remains limited because Google is distributing the update gradually. Consequently, users may see different Gemini Live interfaces depending on their device and account.
The translation feature also fits into Google’s wider multilingual AI strategy. Gemini 3.5 Live Translate supports more than 70 languages and can generate translated speech only a few seconds behind the original speaker.
Furthermore, Google has expanded live translation across its ecosystem. The technology is available through Google Translate on Android and iOS, while Google Meet is also receiving expanded speech-translation capabilities.
As the Gemini Live update reaches more Android devices, real-time translation could become a more direct part of Google’s conversational assistant. For users who regularly communicate across languages, the combination of live translation and a simpler interface adds practical value to Gemini’s voice experience.
