iOS 27 Adds Google Cast Streaming Support

iOS 27 Google Cast interface

Apple is preparing native support for third-party casting protocols, including Google Cast, in iOS 27. The update will allow users to stream content from iPhones and iPads to compatible devices without depending solely on AirPlay.

The change follows new European Union Digital Markets Act requirements that push major technology platforms to reduce ecosystem restrictions. As a result, users in the EU will gain the ability to choose alternative default casting methods for video, audio, and photo streaming.

Google Cast is expected to become one of the main alternatives supported under the update. Consequently, iPhone users may soon cast directly to Chromecast-enabled devices without requiring additional bridging applications.

AirPods Experience Also Receives Major Redesign

Alongside casting updates, Apple is reportedly redesigning the AirPods control panel within iOS 27. The refreshed interface aims to simplify device management and improve wireless connectivity controls.

The redesigned system will likely offer faster access to pairing options, battery information, and audio settings. Meanwhile, Apple continues refining the broader user experience across its ecosystem ahead of the official iOS 27 release.

The AirPods updates also align with Apple’s wider effort to modernize core system interfaces while improving usability across connected devices.

DMA Pressure Continues Shaping Apple’s Ecosystem

The casting support expansion follows several earlier changes introduced under EU regulatory pressure. Apple has already opened support for third-party app stores, alternative browser engines, and expanded NFC access in Europe.

Therefore, iOS 27 represents another major step toward greater interoperability across Apple devices and competing platforms. The company is expected to formally unveil the operating system during WWDC in June before a broader public rollout later this year.

The update signals a gradual shift in Apple’s traditionally closed ecosystem as regulators continue pushing for increased platform openness and user choice.
