ChatGPT Astra Rolls Out to Plus Subscribers
OpenAI is rolling out GPT-6 Astra to ChatGPT Plus subscribers on the $20 monthly plan. The rollout follows the model’s September 3 launch and an initial release to a limited group of organizations.
The company said Astra would reach Plus, Pro, Business, and Enterprise users over the following days. However, access has arrived in stages rather than through one simultaneous release.
By September 4, OpenAI said Astra had reached all Plus and Business users. Nevertheless, Plus subscribers may see the model first through ChatGPT Work or Codex rather than the standard ChatGPT model picker.
Astra Arrives on the $20 Plus Plan
GPT-6 Astra is OpenAI’s latest flagship model. It targets complex reasoning, coding, research, computer use, and multi-step professional tasks.
Moreover, Astra can create documents, spreadsheets, and presentations while following user templates and instructions. It can also adapt when users add requirements or change direction.
OpenAI says Astra usage remains within existing subscription allowances. Therefore, Plus subscribers do not need to purchase a separate subscription for access. Users can also buy additional credits when they need more capacity.
The rollout initially focused on higher-tier users. Soon afterward, OpenAI expanded access to Plus and Business customers. As a result, the $20 tier now has access to the new model at no additional cost.
Plus Access Remains Gradual
However, Astra’s availability can vary by ChatGPT workspace. Some Plus users may find it in ChatGPT Work, while the regular Chat interface still shows older models.
This distinction matters because OpenAI’s rollout announcement initially described Astra as coming to all Plus users. The practical rollout, however, has involved different ChatGPT surfaces and stages.
OpenAI technical staff member Thibault Sottiaux said: “Astra is now rolled out to all Plus and Business users too. Hope you have a blast and let us know how it goes!”
Earlier, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman apologized for the initial rollout problems. He described the launch as a “messy rollout” and said the company would begin broader access shortly.
Consequently, Plus subscribers who still cannot see Astra should check ChatGPT Work and Codex. Availability can also take additional time to appear across individual accounts.
Astra Brings Stronger AI Capabilities
Astra’s rollout comes with significant safety considerations. OpenAI says the model reaches its Critical cybersecurity capability threshold under its Preparedness Framework.
In particular, OpenAI says Astra can discover previously unknown security flaws and develop exploitation methods across protected systems with suitable tools and access. That capability prompted additional safeguards before launch.
The company has also added monitoring that can detect situations where an agent may have misunderstood user instructions. If the system detects a potential problem, it can pause or stop the conversation for review.
Meanwhile, Astra’s computer-use capabilities expand the range of tasks that ChatGPT can perform. The model is designed to interact with computers, browse information, write software, conduct research, and handle complex professional workflows.
For now, OpenAI has not announced equivalent Astra access for free users. The company is therefore positioning the new model primarily within its paid and organizational offerings.
