Google and Samsung Launch AI Smart Glasses for Fall 2026

AI smart glasses with voice assistant

Google and Samsung have unveiled their jointly developed AI-powered smart glasses at Google I/O 2026, marking a significant push into the fast-growing wearable technology market. Unlike traditional smart displays, these glasses focus on audio-first interactions, giving users hands-free access to Gemini AI through voice commands or a simple tap on the frame.

Additionally, the smart glasses connect to smartphones through Bluetooth and Wi-Fi, enabling features such as turn-by-turn navigation, live speech and text translation, photo and video capture, call handling, message summaries, and app interactions without needing to take out a phone. To address privacy concerns, a recording indicator light activates whenever the camera is in use.

Two Product Paths for the Future

The first version arriving this fall will feature audio-only functionality, meaning users will hear AI-generated responses through onboard speakers instead of viewing content through a display. However, the glasses will remain compatible with both Android and iOS devices, expanding their reach across mobile ecosystems.

Meanwhile, a separate display-enabled model called Project Aura also made an appearance. Developed alongside AR hardware maker Xreal, this version includes optical see-through lenses connected to an external compute puck. While broader testing will expand later this year, consumer availability is currently expected in 2027.

Taking on the Smart Glasses Market Leader

This launch places Google and Samsung in direct competition with Meta’s Ray-Ban smart glasses, which currently hold an early advantage in AI eyewear. To strengthen the effort, the companies partnered with fashion eyewear brands Warby Parker and Gentle Monster to make the devices more consumer-friendly in both design and appeal.

Moreover, Google committed up to $150 million in product development funding and equity investment in Warby Parker as part of the collaboration first announced in 2025. Pricing and exact market availability for the fall launch have not yet been disclosed.
