Nvidia Unveils 1-Trillion-Parameter Open-Source AI Model Nemotron 4

Nvidia Nemotron AI model development

Nvidia is developing a new family of open-source artificial intelligence models called Nemotron 4, with its largest version expected to include at least 1 trillion parameters. According to reports, multiple employees involved in the project revealed that the company is working toward creating one of the most advanced open models in the AI industry.

However, Nvidia has not announced an official release date and has not completed the model’s final training process. Meanwhile, employees believe the model could become available as early as late fall. Additionally, the initiative highlights Nvidia’s growing role in open-source frontier AI development as companies face increasing costs and stronger competition from affordable Chinese AI alternatives.

Nvidia’s Push Toward Accessible Frontier AI

“Nvidia is investing in Nemotron because we believe every company and every country needs accessible frontier open models to strengthen safety and security, accelerate innovation, and provide a foundation they can rely on from one generation to the next,” Kari Briski, vice president of generative AI, said in an emailed statement.

Furthermore, the move comes as lower-cost Chinese AI models continue to reduce the performance gap with leading systems from Anthropic and OpenAI. At the same time, recently reported security breaches involving autonomous AI agents have increased demand for open models that provide greater flexibility for cybersecurity applications.

Moreover, Nvidia has joined broader industry efforts focused on AI safety and has supported discussions around open-weight models. The company believes these approaches can help maintain innovation momentum and prevent advanced AI development from shifting away from global technology leaders.

The Nemotron Coalition, announced at GTC in March, includes Mistral AI, Black Forest Labs, and LangChain as founding members collaborating on frontier open models built on Nvidia’s DGX Cloud infrastructure.

New AI Tools Expand Nvidia’s Open-Source Ecosystem

Alongside Nemotron 4 development, Nvidia has introduced two additional AI products. First, Nemotron 3.5 Lightning is a 30-billion-parameter mixture-of-experts model with 3 billion active parameters, designed for continuous agent-based tasks such as code review, tool usage, security monitoring and billing queries.

Additionally, Nvidia claims the model can deliver up to four times faster token generation compared with similar-sized models. As a result, the company says it can improve agent-based task completion speeds by approximately 30%.

Furthermore, Nvidia launched NeMo Switchyard, an open-source model-routing library that automatically selects the most suitable AI model for different tasks. This allows enterprises to operate multiple AI models efficiently without redesigning their existing applications.

Consequently, Nvidia’s expanding open-source AI strategy reflects the company’s effort to provide businesses and developers with flexible tools while shaping the future direction of advanced artificial intelligence.
