OpenAI has launched GPT-6.1 Sol, a new model designed to deliver near-Astra performance for complex professional work.
The model targets coding, computer use, and professional workflows. Moreover, OpenAI says GPT-6.1 Sol improves substantially over the recently released GPT-6 Sol.
Near-Astra Performance at Lower Pricing
OpenAI positions GPT-6.1 Sol as a lower-cost alternative for demanding workloads. According to the company, it approaches GPT-6 Astra across several coding, computer-use, and professional-work evaluations.
The standard API price is $2 per million input tokens and $10 per million output tokens. By comparison, GPT-6 Astra costs $10 per million input tokens and $50 per million output tokens. Therefore, GPT-6.1 Sol carries one-fifth of Astra’s standard input and output pricing.
Cached input is priced at $0.10 per million tokens. Additionally, the model supports a 1.05-million-token context window and up to 128,000 output tokens.
Focus on Coding and Agentic Work
GPT-6.1 Sol is built for complex coding and multi-step professional tasks. Furthermore, OpenAI highlights computer use and agentic workflows as key areas for the model.
The company reports that Sol matches GPT-6 Astra in some software engineering evaluations. However, performance varies by benchmark and task. OpenAI’s published results show that Sol remains below Astra on certain cybersecurity tests.
OpenAI has also classified GPT-6.1 Sol as having Critical cybersecurity capability under its Preparedness Framework. Consequently, the model uses the same safeguards stack described for GPT-6 Astra.
Availability Across OpenAI Products
GPT-6.1 Sol is available through the OpenAI API and selected ChatGPT Work and Codex experiences. However, OpenAI’s current documentation says it is not yet available in standard ChatGPT.
The launch also follows reports that OpenAI halted a planned GPT-6.1 Astra release after internal safety concerns. Meanwhile, the company continues to position Astra as its highest-capability model for the most demanding work.
As a result, GPT-6.1 Sol gives developers another option between maximum capability and inference cost. Its published pricing and benchmark results will allow organisations to assess whether the lower-cost model meets their specific workloads.
