Microsoft has unveiled the Xbox Nano Controller, a compact wireless gamepad designed for portability, younger players, and people with smaller hands. The controller costs $49.99 in the United States and will launch on November 4. Pre-orders are already open in selected markets.
At just over five inches long and weighing approximately 3.5 ounces, the Nano is Microsoft’s smallest Xbox controller to date. Moreover, it retains all 18 standard gameplay inputs in a pocket-friendly design. The device offers a familiar control layout while making gaming easier to carry around home, school, and on the go.
Compact Design with Familiar Xbox Controls
The Nano controller uses a slimmer, more rectangular design than Microsoft’s standard wireless gamepad. It removes the prominent side grips found on conventional controllers, reducing its overall size. Consequently, users can carry it in a pocket or small bag more easily.
Despite its reduced dimensions, the controller retains the familiar Xbox button layout. It also includes a rechargeable internal battery, eliminating the need for disposable AA batteries. However, Microsoft sells the USB-C charging cable separately.
The controller also features a programmable Action Button. Users can assign shortcuts for functions such as taking screenshots or capturing gameplay. Therefore, players can access frequently used features without navigating through menus.
Connectivity and Device Compatibility
The Xbox Nano supports Xbox Wireless for compatible Xbox consoles. In addition, Bluetooth connectivity allows it to work with Windows 10 and 11 PCs, tablets, iOS devices, Android devices, and compatible smart TVs
Microsoft positions the controller as an accessible option for casual and family gaming. For example, players can use it with titles such as Minecraft Dungeons II and Forza Horizon 6. Furthermore, its compact design makes it suitable for gaming away from a traditional console setup.
Microsoft is also partnering with Samsung to offer the Nano controller, along with two months of Xbox Game Pass Ultimate, to new members who purchase selected Samsung TVs in the United States during the holiday season. Meanwhile, the company is developing a similar offer with Meta for eligible Meta Quest purchases.
Price, Availability and Market Position
The Xbox Nano Controller costs $49.99 in the United States, with pre-orders available through Microsoft’s online store and selected retailers. Microsoft plans to begin sales on November 4, 2026, across multiple markets, including the United States, United Kingdom, Japan, Australia, and Canada. Additional regions will follow.
The price puts the Nano below the standard Xbox Wireless Controller’s original US price of $64.99. However, discounts can bring the larger controller’s price close to the Nano’s, so buyers should compare current offers before choosing.
The Nano’s main appeal lies in its portability, rechargeable battery, and broad device compatibility. Nevertheless, its smaller form may feel less comfortable during long gaming sessions for users who prefer full-size grips. The separate charging cable also adds a small extra cost.
Overall, the Xbox Nano Controller offers a practical alternative for travel, family gaming, and smaller hands. Its value will depend on whether buyers prioritise portability over the fuller grip and size of a standard Xbox controller.
