Emirates Completes First A380 Starlink Install With Multi-Gigabit Speeds

Emirates A380 Starlink WiFi installation

Emirates has completed installation of next-generation Starlink Wi-Fi on its first Airbus A380. As a result, the aircraft returned to Dubai after certification in Newquay, UK. At the same time, SpaceX is promoting major advances in in-flight connectivity through its Starlink service.

Nick Seitz, global head of Starlink Aviation, declared on LinkedIn the arrival of “multi-gigabit in-flight internet,” stating that Starlink is “equipping commercial planes with systems capable of exceeding 2 Gbps” for the first time. Meanwhile, Emirates said the system uses three Starlink antennas per A380 to deliver more than 2 Gbps of total aircraft bandwidth. Consequently, the airline described the improvement as “a thousand-fold” over earlier systems.

However, the total bandwidth is shared across all passengers on board. Therefore, individual speeds typically reach or exceed 100 Mbps during real-world use.

Rapid Expansion Across Global Airlines

Following this milestone, Starlink has expanded quickly across the aviation sector. More than 36 major airlines have committed to the service, which shows strong market momentum. For example, British Airways launched its first Starlink-equipped flight in April using a Boeing 787-8. Similarly, Virgin Atlantic accelerated its rollout, with its first equipped A350 entering service in May.

In addition, Southwest Airlines plans to begin installations in summer 2026 and aims to equip 300 aircraft by year-end. Meanwhile, United Airlines continues its rollout, targeting full fleet coverage by 2027. As a result, adoption across the industry continues to accelerate.

Competition Intensifies with Amazon Leo

At the same time, Amazon is advancing its Project Kuiper aviation strategy, often referred to as Leo. At Aircraft Interiors Expo 2026, the company introduced a new aviation antenna capable of up to 1 Gbps download and 400 Mbps upload speeds. Moreover, it emphasized quick installation to attract airline partners.

Several airlines have already signed agreements. For instance, Delta Air Lines plans to equip 500 aircraft starting in 2028, while JetBlue expects service to begin in 2027. Meanwhile, Amazon aims to launch its service commercially by mid-2026 with about 700 satellites in orbit.

In contrast, Starlink already operates more than 10,000 low-Earth orbit satellites. Furthermore, SpaceX is preparing next-generation satellites designed to deliver over one terabit per second of downlink capacity each. Therefore, both companies are pushing toward faster, more reliable connectivity.

Ultimately, this rivalry could transform in-flight internet for passengers. However, both providers still need to prove they can deliver consistent performance at scale.
