OpenAI is developing smartphone processors in partnership with Qualcomm and MediaTek, targeting mass production by 2028. As a result, the company is expanding beyond software into mobile hardware. The initiative marks a significant step toward building integrated AI-driven devices.
The project remains in early stages, while specifications and supplier decisions are expected by late 2026 or early 2027. In addition, Luxshare has been selected as the system co-design and manufacturing partner. AI Agent-Based Phone Concept
The smartphone concept focuses on replacing traditional app-based interfaces with AI agents. Instead of switching between apps, users would rely on AI systems to complete tasks directly. Consequently, everyday activities such as scheduling, communication, and bookings could become automated.
