OpenAI Executive Brad Lightcap Leaves Company
Brad Lightcap, a longtime OpenAI executive, is leaving after eight years to pursue a new venture. He announced the decision Tuesday, August 11, in a message to employees that he also shared publicly.
Lightcap did not disclose the venture’s name or focus. However, he said he intends to “start something new” and suggested he will remain close to the AI sector. He also described the departure as “bittersweet.”
“I have decided to leave OpenAI,” Lightcap wrote. He added that he is “not going far” and referred to “a few important new things the world will need to get right” as AI becomes more capable.
Meanwhile, his departure closes an eight-year chapter that began in 2018. Lightcap joined OpenAI after roles at Y Combinator, Dropbox and J.P. Morgan. Over time, he helped build core business and operational functions.
A major leadership role
Lightcap became OpenAI’s chief operating officer in 2022. In that position, he oversaw business operations, partnerships and functions supporting the company’s expansion.
Moreover, OpenAI expanded his responsibilities in March 2025. He then covered global deployment, business strategy, infrastructure and partnerships. In April 2026, however, the company moved him into a special projects role.
That position focused on complex deals and investments. At the time, Denise Dresser, OpenAI’s chief revenue officer, took over several of Lightcap’s commercial responsibilities. The changes formed part of a wider executive reshuffle.
Broader leadership changes
Lightcap’s exit follows several senior leadership changes at OpenAI. Earlier this year, Fidji Simo moved away from her full-time leadership role and became a part-time adviser. Meanwhile, other executives have also left or changed responsibilities as OpenAI adjusts its structure.
The timing is significant because OpenAI is entering another expansion phase. The company is also pursuing enterprise growth while investing heavily in AI infrastructure and products.
For now, Lightcap has offered few details about his next move. Nevertheless, his departure adds another leadership transition as OpenAI navigates rapid commercial and organizational change.
