xAI Targets Grok 4.6 August Launch
Elon Musk says xAI plans to release Grok 4.6 around Aug. 7, marking another rapid update in the company’s artificial intelligence roadmap. The announcement came through a post on X, where Musk also outlined plans for a larger Grok 4.7 model that will follow a few weeks later. Consequently, xAI is maintaining an aggressive release schedule as competition intensifies across the AI industry.
According to Musk, Grok 4.6 will be a 1.5-trillion-parameter model with significantly improved supervised fine-tuning (SFT) and reinforcement learning (RL). These enhancements aim to improve reasoning, instruction following, and overall response quality. Moreover, the company expects the update to deliver better performance while maintaining efficient deployment.
Grok 4.7 to Follow Weeks Later
Musk also revealed that Grok 4.7 is scheduled to launch a few weeks after version 4.6. He said the upcoming model will feature 2.1 trillion parameters, making it considerably larger than its predecessor. However, he noted that the larger model will be “slightly slower to serve” while offering improved token efficiency and stronger capabilities overall.
The planned releases continue xAI’s strategy of delivering frequent model upgrades rather than waiting for longer development cycles. As a result, the company aims to respond quickly to advances from competitors while refining its models through iterative improvements.
Intensifying Competition in Generative AI
The announcement comes as AI developers continue accelerating model releases. OpenAI, Google, Anthropic, Meta, and other companies have introduced increasingly capable foundation models over the past year, prompting xAI to expand Grok’s capabilities at a faster pace. Therefore, the upcoming releases represent another step in the race to improve reasoning, coding, multimodal understanding, and enterprise AI performance.
Earlier this month, xAI introduced Grok 4.5, which the company described as its most capable model for coding, agentic workflows, and knowledge-intensive tasks. Consequently, Grok 4.6 and 4.7 are expected to build on those advances with improved training techniques and larger model architectures.
xAI Maintains a Rapid Development Pace
Although Musk provided an expected launch window, xAI has not announced whether the Aug. 7 target could change before release. Even so, the company continues signaling its intention to iterate quickly as demand for advanced AI assistants grows. If the timeline holds, Grok 4.6 will become xAI’s next major model update before the arrival of the larger Grok 4.7 later this month.
