Cyber Pulse Warns Users of Unsafe Streaming Risks
As part of its weekly ‘Cyber Pulse’ awareness initiative, the Cyber Security Council has urged users to strengthen security measures when streaming or downloading content online. In particular, the guidance stresses combining technical safeguards with responsible online behavior. As a result, users can better reduce exposure to malware, hacking attempts, and privacy breaches.
Under the theme ‘Stream Safe… Download Smart,’ the latest message highlights the importance of relying on trusted platforms for movies and music. Moreover, it emphasizes that reputable services play a key role in protecting both devices and personal data. At the same time, users are encouraged to remain cautious, as cybercriminals continue to refine deceptive techniques that make fraudulent websites and messages appear legitimate.
Rising threats and risky platforms
According to the Council, cybercriminals increasingly use convincing messages and advanced tools to mislead users. Therefore, individuals must stay vigilant before accessing any website or application. In addition, verifying the credibility of links and the accuracy of online information is essential.
The Council specifically warned against free streaming websites. While such platforms may appear appealing, ‘free’ does not necessarily mean secure or trustworthy. In some cases, websites offer free content while exploiting or selling personal data, which creates serious privacy risks. Consequently, this reality highlights the growing need for defensive tools supported by awareness and a clear understanding of cyber threats.
Users should also recognize that unsafe practices can have serious consequences. For example, accessing untrusted sites or downloading content from unreliable sources may lead to data breaches, privacy violations, or devices infected with malware or ransomware designed to steal personal information.
Awareness, data, and preventive steps
The Cyber Pulse campaign underscored the scale of the threat with recent figures. By the end of 2024, piracy websites had recorded around 216 billion visits. Meanwhile, more than 90 percent of music files were exchanged through illegal networks. In addition, about 70 percent of users were unaware that free streaming sites can act as gateways for malware, and roughly one million computers were compromised after visiting illegal platforms.
To reduce these risks, the campaign outlined practical steps for users. These include avoiding untrusted links, verifying information in messages and sponsored ads, relying on official platforms, and activating updated security software to detect and remove threats. Furthermore, the Council stressed that cybersecurity remains a major challenge in today’s digital environment. Therefore, individual preventive actions play an important role alongside broader efforts to address rapidly evolving digital threats.
Now in its second year, the Cyber Pulse campaign continues across social media platforms. At the same time, it supports national efforts to build a secure digital ecosystem, strengthen cybersecurity culture among families and individuals, and promote best practices that protect privacy and safety in an era of accelerated digital transformation.
