Unity has launched dedicated engine support for Netflix Games, strengthening a partnership focused on helping developers create and deliver games across Netflix’s growing mobile and television gaming ecosystem. Moreover, the new support aims to simplify development by improving performance across multiple platforms and devices.
The update includes optimizations for Netflix’s cloud gaming services and helps studios “build once and ship across platforms,” according to Unity. Additionally, these improvements aim to make the user journey smoother by reducing the time between discovering a game and starting gameplay.
Several Netflix Games titles already use Unity technology, including Black Mirror: Thronglets, Unhinged, and Squid Game: Unleashed. Furthermore, Night School Studio, a Netflix subsidiary, uses Unity tools for faster testing and development on projects such as Black Mirror: Thronglets. Meanwhile, Netflix continues to expand gaming beyond mobile devices, with plans to introduce cloud-based games on television screens through popular franchises such as Bridgerton, Stranger Things, and Squid Game.
Unity 7 brings new development improvements
The Netflix partnership arrives shortly after Unity introduced Unity 7, its next major engine version. Furthermore, Unity plans to launch the Unity 7 beta in December 2026, followed by a full release in early 2027.
Additionally, Unity describes the new version as a continuation of Unity 6’s architecture. Therefore, developers can move existing projects forward without rebuilding them completely. The update will include faster shader compilation, modernized CoreCLR foundations, and improved lighting performance through Surface Cache GI.
A stronger connection with Netflix’s gaming strategy
Unity’s SVP of Product, Adam Smith, has noted that the unchanged underlying architecture allows teams to move smoothly to Unity 7 while maintaining support for existing workflows.
Moreover, the dedicated Netflix support makes Unity a more important part of Netflix’s gaming plans. As a result, developers can create experiences that reach more screens while Netflix continues expanding its games catalog across different platforms.
Additionally, the collaboration highlights the growing importance of flexible game engines in the streaming industry. Consequently, Unity’s latest developments could help studios build more accessible and connected gaming experiences for global audiences.
