UAE Warns of 12,000 Public Wi-Fi Cyber Breaches in 2025

UAE Cyber Security Council warns about Wi-Fi risks

The UAE Cyber Security Council (CSC) has issued a warning about the risks of public Wi-Fi. Since the start of 2025, more than 12,000 breaches have been recorded in the country, accounting for nearly 35% of all reported cyberattacks. Hackers are increasingly exploiting unprotected networks to steal passwords, banking details, and personal information.

The Council urged residents and businesses to be vigilant. It advised against performing sensitive transactions on free Wi-Fi and encouraged the use of multi-factor authentication alongside trusted security tools. According to the CSC, awareness and safe digital habits can significantly reduce exposure to online threats.

Dangers of Public Wi-Fi

The Council emphasized that many users underestimate risks when connecting to networks in cafés, airports, and shopping centres. Although these networks seem convenient, they often lack proper security. As a result, hackers can intercept data, redirect browsing activity, or even install spyware.

Dr. Mohammed Al Kuwaiti, Head of Cyber Security for the UAE Government, said: “Under the directives of the wise leadership, the UAE continues its pioneering and ongoing efforts to build a safe cyber environment that protects users from growing digital threats while keeping pace with rapid technological developments.

“These efforts are part of a comprehensive national vision to strengthen trust in the country’s digital ecosystem, enhance the culture of cybersecurity, and raise awareness about the importance of safe browsing and digital practices.”

The CSC noted that careless use of public Wi-Fi could lead to fraud, phishing, and malware. Because of this, it recommends that users take specific steps to protect themselves.

Safety Measures and Awareness

To mitigate risks, the Council outlined three precautions:

The CSC explained: “Using a reliable VPN application not only ensures privacy but is also an effective tool for protecting digital identity in an interconnected world prone to frequent breaches. Awareness represents the first line of defence in confronting cybercrimes.”

Additionally, the Cyber Pulse campaign is returning for a second year on social media. The initiative will focus on promoting online safety, encouraging best practices, and strengthening cybersecurity resilience among individuals and institutions.
