YouTube Expands Automatic AI Video Detection and Labeling System

YouTube AI content detection labels

YouTube has announced a major update that will automatically detect and label AI-generated videos across the platform. Previously, creators had to manually disclose the use of generative AI tools. However, the company will now use internal systems to identify realistic AI-generated content on its own.

“Starting in May 2026, we’re rolling out new internal signals to help identify AI-generated content,” YouTube said in a blog post. “If a creator doesn’t specify whether or not they used AI, but our systems detect significant photorealistic AI use, we will now automatically apply a label.”

The update strengthens YouTube’s existing disclosure policy, which first launched in 2024. Additionally, creators who believe their videos were incorrectly labeled can adjust the disclosure settings through YouTube Studio.

AI Labels Become More Visible

YouTube is also redesigning how viewers see AI disclosure labels. For standard long-form videos, the notice will now appear directly below the video player and above the description section. Meanwhile, YouTube Shorts will display the label directly on the video as an overlay.

“By moving these labels on to the main stage, viewers get the context they need at a glance,” YouTube said. “This is now the single label format for all photorealistic and meaningfully AI altered or generated content on YouTube.”

However, videos that appear clearly animated, unrealistic, or only slightly edited will continue showing disclosures only inside the expanded description section.

Some AI Labels Will Remain Permanent

Certain AI disclosures will become permanent under the updated system. This includes videos created using YouTube’s own AI tools such as Veo and Dream Screen. Additionally, content carrying C2PA metadata that confirms full AI generation will automatically receive permanent labels.

YouTube is also a steering member of the Coalition for Content Provenance and Authenticity, the organization responsible for developing the C2PA content verification standard.

The company clarified that these labels will not affect recommendations or monetization eligibility. Nevertheless, the changes arrive as regulators increase pressure on digital platforms to improve transparency around AI-generated media. The EU AI Act, for example, will introduce new disclosure requirements for AI-generated content starting in August 2026.
