UAE Student Research Funding: Dh40,000 Grants for Innovation & Science

The UAE Student Research Funding Initiative has been launched to provide financial support of up to Dh40,000 for ten student-led research teams, fostering innovation, scientific inquiry, and technological advancement among the youth. Announced at the World Government Summit 2025, this initiative is designed to empower students with hands-on research opportunities and enable them to contribute to scientific and industrial development.

The joint research program, a collaborative effort between UAE University and the Arab Youth Centre, will span seven to eight months and aims to enhance the research capabilities of students by providing them with resources and mentorship. The program will support the development of scientific publications and encourage the creation of practical solutions for global challenges.

Nurturing Scientific Research Among Youth

One of the key objectives of the UAE Student Research Funding Initiative is to equip students with the skills and knowledge needed to excel in scientific research. Participants will have the opportunity to present their findings at international conferences, allowing them to expand their professional networks and receive global recognition for their contributions.

Zaki Anwar Nusseibeh, Cultural Advisor to the President of the UAE and Chancellor of UAE University, highlighted the significance of investing in the younger generation:

“The future of our country depends on the intellect and creativity of our youth. By funding their research projects, we are not just investing in science—we are shaping the leaders of tomorrow.”

He further emphasized that the initiative is structured to foster a scientific ecosystem, one that motivates young minds to become pioneers in their respective fields and drive positive change in society.

Leadership’s Commitment to Youth Empowerment

The UAE Student Research Funding Initiative operates under the direction of Sheikh Theyab bin Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Deputy Chairman of the Presidential Court for Development and Fallen Heroes’ Affairs and President of the Arab Youth Centre.

Speaking at the World Government Summit 2025, Dr Sultan Alneyadi, Minister of State for Youth Affairs, discussed the critical role of scientific research and innovation in national development. He underscored the UAE’s dedication to empowering young minds and enabling them to take an active role in shaping the country’s technological future.

“Our society thrives on unity, compassion, and progress. It is essential that we harness the capabilities of our Arab youth, ensuring they are at the forefront of technological advancements and industry transformation.”

Dr Alneyadi also addressed concerns regarding technology and automation replacing traditional jobs, arguing instead that technological innovation creates new opportunities for employment and entrepreneurship.

Bridging the Gap in the Industrial Sector

Beyond the student research initiative, the UAE has been actively working on integrating Emirati youth into the industrial sector. Salama Al Awadhi, Assistant Under-Secretary for Industrial Development at the Ministry of Industry and Advanced Technology, spoke about the importance of increasing local participation in the manufacturing industry.

“In 2021, we observed that despite having approximately 500,000 workers in the industrial sector, the number of Emiratis employed in this field was significantly low. Our goal is to create a skilled national workforce capable of competing on an international level.”

To tackle this issue, the UAE introduced the Manufacturers Initiative in 2022, aimed at equipping Emirati youth with the necessary skills to excel in the evolving industrial landscape. So far, the program has generated over 500 job opportunities for Emiratis in advanced manufacturing and technology-driven industries.

Al Awadhi also emphasized the remarkable growth of the UAE’s industrial sector, noting that its contribution to the country’s GDP surged from Dh133 billion in 2020 to more than Dh210 billion in 2024.

A Bold Vision for Scientific and Technological Advancement

As the UAE continues to position itself as a global leader in research and innovation, the Student Research Funding Initiative will serve as a catalyst for academic and scientific excellence. By integrating financial support, mentorship, and international exposure, the program is expected to shape the next generation of scientists, researchers, and industry leaders.

With a clear vision for technological progress and scientific innovation, the UAE remains committed to nurturing young talent, ensuring that they have the resources and opportunities to make groundbreaking contributions to various fields.

This initiative marks another milestone in the country’s mission to build a knowledge-based economy, reinforcing its reputation as a hub for research, education, and innovation.
