OpenAI introduced GPT-5.5 on Thursday, describing it as its “smartest and most intuitive” model so far. However, the launch followed several days of leaks, accidental exposures, and cryptic hints that heightened anticipation.
Initially, API monitors detected large-scale testing of an unreleased model on April 19. Soon after, on April 22, a misconfigured API endpoint briefly routed public traffic to a model codenamed “Arcanine” for about 47 minutes. As a result, at least one developer captured the interaction before the issue was fixed. Meanwhile, a separate exposure appeared in the Codex coding tool, where an internal dropdown briefly displayed unreleased models such as GPT-5.5, oai-2.1, and glacier-alpha.
In addition, a Reddit user shared a video showing the Codex model picker, including tooltips that described GPT-5.5 as a “latest frontier agentic coding model.” At the same time, developers who accessed the models reported faster coding performance and improved token efficiency before access disappeared.
Cryptic Teasers and Market Reactions
As the launch approached, a cryptic post reading “NS41” appeared on X without explanation. Shortly afterward, users began decoding the message through different methods. “The text NS41 in the tweet is a Base64-encoded string,” one user explained. “When decoded, it reveals: 5.5”.
Consequently, the speculation triggered intense activity on prediction platforms. Following the Codex leak on April 22, the probability of a next-day release surged significantly. Moreover, patterns in previous releases, along with leadership activity on social media, further strengthened expectations of an imminent announcement.
Official Launch and Rollout
Finally, the official announcement confirmed the release of GPT-5.5, highlighting major improvements in performance and usability. Greg Brockman described it as “a new class of intelligence” and “a big step towards more agentic and intuitive computing,” adding that the model is “extremely good” at agentic coding, knowledge work, and scientific research.
At the same time, Jakub Pachocki emphasized continued progress, stating that the company expects “quite rapid continued progress,” while noting that “the last few years have been surprisingly slow”.
Following the announcement, GPT-5.5 began rolling out to Plus, Pro, Business, and Enterprise users across ChatGPT and Codex. Additionally, API access is expected soon. Notably, this release arrives just seven weeks after GPT-5.4, suggesting a faster pace of development moving forward.
