OpenAI has introduced the Admin plugin for ChatGPT Work and Codex. The new tool lets workspace administrators analyse activity, manage access and complete supported administrative actions through a conversation.
Previously, administrators often had to move between analytics, settings and reports to manage growing AI workspaces. Now, the Admin plugin brings these functions into one conversational workflow. As a result, admins can ask questions, examine workspace details, make authorised changes and confirm the outcome without switching between separate tools.
Admin Plugin Brings Workspace Controls Together
The plugin provides several functions for day-to-day administration. For example, admins can review ChatGPT Work and Codex activity, examine credit usage and identify members approaching usage limits. They can also add or remove members, update groups, and support routine onboarding or offboarding.
Furthermore, the Admin plugin can review effective permissions and help diagnose access issues. Admins can also control feature or model access according to roles and groups. In addition, they can adjust usage limits and review spending requests against current usage.
OpenAI has also designed the system for recurring administrative workflows. For instance, admins can route pending usage requests to Slack or Microsoft Teams for authorised approval. The plugin can also monitor feature-access requests and automatically approve requests that meet predefined criteria. Exceptions can then move to human review.
Importantly, the plugin does not expand an administrator’s existing authority. Instead, it operates within the user’s current role and permissions. Therefore, each request maps to supported read or write actions while workspace policies and approval requirements remain in force.
OpenAI Expands Agentic Administration
OpenAI is also using the Admin plugin internally. According to the company, its IT team can use conversational queries to examine data, generate reports, and gain operational insights. Moreover, the team can connect those insights directly to supported administrative actions.
Kunal Malik, Head of Global IT at OpenAI, said: “The value is far beyond faster reporting. The Admin plugin connects the question to the next supported action, whether that is checking someone’s effective permissions, updating a group, changing a usage limit, or reviewing a spending request. It gives admins a faster way to understand what is happening and take action, while preserving the same permissions and controls we already use.”
Meanwhile, OpenAI says its IT team already uses ChatGPT Work agents for employee support. These workflows can triage tickets, retrieve context, check approved policies and complete supported tasks. At the time of the announcement, OpenAI reported that deployed workflows resolved about 45% of ticket volume.
The Admin plugin is now available through the Plugins directory in ChatGPT Work. Users can enable it through workspace settings and install it from the directory on the web or desktop app.
The launch therefore marks another step toward conversational enterprise administration. As AI becomes more deeply embedded in workplace operations, OpenAI is positioning ChatGPT Work and Codex as interfaces for both analysis and controlled action.
