Replit Picks OpenAI Over Anthropic as Preferred AI Coding Partner

Replit selects OpenAI over Anthropic models

Replit has selected OpenAI as its preferred AI partner, replacing Anthropic as the default model provider for its coding platform. However, users can still access Anthropic’s Claude models and other supported AI systems.

The decision reflects Replit’s focus on AI performance, cost efficiency and stronger technology partnerships. Additionally, the company aims to improve its AI-powered application development capabilities while maintaining flexibility for users.

Replit announced its partnership with OpenAI in August 2026. However, the company had not previously indicated that OpenAI would replace Anthropic as its preferred provider.

OpenAI Becomes Replit’s Preferred AI Partner

Replit evaluates AI models through internal and public benchmarks that measure performance across software development tasks.

According to these evaluations, OpenAI’s Sol and Astra models consistently perform well when building applications from scratch. Consequently, Replit selected OpenAI based on performance, pricing and partnership considerations.

Nevertheless, Replit continues supporting multiple AI providers, including Anthropic. Users can still select Claude or other supported models based on their development requirements.

Previously, Replit relied heavily on Anthropic’s Claude models to power its cloud-based development platform. Moreover, the partnership reportedly contributed to substantial revenue growth.

Replit also ranked among Anthropic’s five largest customers until recently, highlighting the scale of their commercial relationship.

However, the companies’ relationship has not ended entirely. Individuals familiar with the partnership have indicated that their agreement remains active.

Additionally, Replit continued promoting Anthropic models through its documentation, blog posts and social media activity in September 2026.

For instance, the company referenced Claude Fable 5 and Claude Fable 5.1 as models operating within Replit Agent. Meanwhile, its employees highlighted the capabilities of Anthropic’s Opus 5.5 model.

Although Anthropic remains available, OpenAI’s default position could significantly reduce Replit’s spending on competing models. This is because many users typically retain default settings instead of manually switching providers.

Replit Sees Strong Growth in Enterprise Adoption

Beyond its AI partnerships, Replit is experiencing growing demand from enterprise customers.

Enterprise contracts accounted for approximately 2% of the company’s revenue in 2025. However, that figure increased to around 15% in 2026, reflecting stronger adoption among business customers.

Additionally, business-to-business transactions now generate more than 50% of Replit’s revenue.

This growth highlights the increasing demand for AI-powered development platforms among organizations seeking faster software delivery.

Furthermore, Replit expects enterprise and government customers to contribute more than half of its revenue in 2027.

The company is also expanding its focus beyond individual developers and startups. Consequently, enterprise adoption is becoming an increasingly important part of its long-term business strategy.

AI Safety and Secure Infrastructure Drive Future Development

Alongside its commercial expansion, Replit is prioritizing AI safety, security and infrastructure reliability.

As autonomous AI agents become more capable, they require secure environments to execute tasks effectively. Therefore, reliable orchestration, error recovery and sandboxing are essential for safe AI deployment.

Additionally, strong networking, identity management and authorization systems help protect applications and sensitive information.

These capabilities allow AI agents to operate within controlled environments while reducing operational and security risks.

Furthermore, Replit’s focus on infrastructure reflects the growing need for dependable AI-powered development platforms.

Meanwhile, the company’s preference for OpenAI demonstrates how performance, economics and strategic partnerships increasingly influence AI model selection.

Although Replit maintains a model-agnostic approach, OpenAI now powers its preferred Replit Agent experience.

Ultimately, Replit aims to combine advanced AI capabilities, flexible model selection and secure infrastructure as enterprise demand continues to grow.
