Disney Set to Hire Most of Character.AI’s Workforce

Disney hires Character.AI employees after bankruptcy

Disney has agreed to hire most of Character.AI’s workforce following the chatbot startup’s bankruptcy filing earlier this week. The agreement offers employees new opportunities while allowing Disney to strengthen its artificial intelligence capabilities.

Character.AI filed for bankruptcy on October 13, 2026, amid mounting financial and legal challenges. However, its existing relationship with Disney has created a potential path forward for much of its workforce.

Disney Offers Jobs to at Least 60 Character.AI Employees

According to a legal filing, Disney has agreed to offer employment to at least 60 Character.AI employees. This represents the majority of the startup’s workforce.

Additionally, the entertainment giant expects to provide approximately $60 million in annual compensation to these employees.

The agreement follows the appointment of Character.AI’s former CEO, Karandeep Anand, as Disney’s first Chief Technology Officer in September 2026.

Previously, Character.AI also disclosed that Disney had agreed to acquire certain company assets for $20 million.

Moreover, the legal filing indicates that the “vast majority” of employees who received Disney job offers accepted them.

However, the agreement remains subject to a competitive bankruptcy sale process. Disney’s proposal serves as a stalking horse bid, meaning another company could submit a higher offer.

Financial Pressures and Legal Challenges Behind Bankruptcy

Despite attracting a “large and engaged user base,” Character.AI struggled with rising operational expenses and legal uncertainties.

According to the bankruptcy filing, the company faced substantial costs alongside “potential litigation-related liabilities and regulatory engagement.”

Furthermore, Character.AI has faced scrutiny over concerns about chatbot interactions with younger users.

In one lawsuit, the mother of a 14-year-old boy alleged that her son developed an intense attachment to a Character.AI chatbot before dying by suicide.

Additionally, the startup has faced government investigations concerning child safety and potential risks associated with AI-powered conversational platforms.

Disney Strengthens Its AI Capabilities

Meanwhile, Disney’s proposed acquisition and recruitment agreement could expand its internal AI expertise.

By bringing experienced Character.AI employees into its operations, Disney could strengthen its technical capabilities across digital entertainment and emerging technologies.

Furthermore, Anand’s appointment as CTO establishes a leadership connection between the two companies.

Nevertheless, the bankruptcy sale process remains open to competing offers, leaving the final outcome uncertain.

For Character.AI employees, Disney’s employment agreement provides a potential transition during the startup’s restructuring. At the same time, the arrangement highlights how established entertainment companies can attract AI talent amid industry consolidation.
