Google Brings Personal Gemini AI to Cars

Google Gemini Personal Intelligence Driving Assistant

Google is making its Gemini AI assistant more personal for drivers through a new feature called Personal Intelligence. Announced on October 20, 2026, the update lets Gemini use information from connected Google services to answer questions while users drive.

The feature is rolling out to Android Auto, with support for vehicles with built-in Google expected in the coming months. It also aims to make voice assistance more useful by connecting travel requests to information users already have in their accounts.

Gemini Connects Personal Information With Driving

With permission, Gemini can draw on information from Gmail, Google Calendar, Google Photos, Google Maps, YouTube, and Google Search. As a result, drivers can ask natural questions without manually searching through multiple apps.

For example, someone driving to the airport can ask Gemini for their flight gate and whether the flight is delayed. Gemini can check relevant details in an email and provide an answer in one interaction. Similarly, drivers can ask for directions to an appointment listed in their calendar.

The assistant can also use information from photos and saved places. For instance, a driver can ask Gemini to find a car wash they photographed earlier or recommend a restaurant along their route. It can also consider known preferences when suggesting places to visit.

Rollout, Privacy Controls and Availability

Google says Personal Intelligence is optional. Users must enable the feature and choose which connected services Gemini can access. They can also change these permissions or turn the feature off in Gemini settings.

For vehicles with Google built-in, Google says Gemini provides personalised responses when the user’s phone connects to the car. Meanwhile, drivers who don’t enable Personal Intelligence can keep using standard features such as navigation, calls, music, and general questions.

However, access to Personal Intelligence has restrictions. The initial rollout targets eligible personal Google accounts belonging to users aged 18 and older. Google currently excludes Workspace business, enterprise, and education accounts, as well as users in the European Economic Area, Switzerland, the United Kingdom, and Nigeria. Availability may vary by region and account eligibility.

The update also raises questions about personal data in shared vehicles. Although Google gives users control over connected apps, drivers should review their permissions before linking email, photos, and calendar information. This matters particularly when passengers may hear Gemini’s responses.

Ultimately, Google is extending Gemini beyond general voice commands towards assistance based on personal context. The feature could reduce the need to search through apps while driving. However, its practical value will depend on response accuracy, regional availability, and users’ comfort with sharing personal information.
