G-Shock MRG-D5000 Blue Sapphire Watch Debuts at $80,000

G-Shock MRG-D5000 blue sapphire watch

The MRG-D5000 Blue Sapphire marks a major step in luxury watchmaking. Limited to only 20 pieces worldwide, the model combines advanced materials with traditional Japanese craftsmanship.

Sapphire Construction Meets Traditional Craft

The watch features an outer case and bezel made entirely from synthetic blue sapphire crystal. However, working with the material created significant engineering challenges. The watch measures 16.45mm thick, allowing enough space to support the sapphire structure.

Instead of using conventional drill holes and screws, engineers developed an interlocking assembly system. The design draws inspiration from traditional Japanese timber joinery. As a result, individual sapphire components connect like a three-dimensional puzzle.

This structure helps absorb and distribute impact forces while protecting the watch. At the same time, the MRG-D5000 retains 200-meter water resistance and solar-powered functionality.

The concept dates back to 2017, when brand creator Kikuo Ibe envisioned a G-Shock made with sapphire. However, turning that idea into a production model required almost a decade of technical development.

Classic Design With Premium Details

Despite its advanced construction, the watch maintains the familiar square silhouette introduced in 1983. Meanwhile, its blue vapor-deposition brick-pattern dial adds a distinctive finish.

The dial also features 24-carat gold lettering, giving the watch a more luxurious appearance. On the reverse, a Grade 5 titanium caseback sits beneath sapphire crystal.

The caseback carries the words “DREAM PROJECT” along with the individual production number. Each watch is numbered from 1/20 through 20/20. Furthermore, every piece is hand-assembled by one senior technician at the Yamagata facility.

Only 20 Pieces Worldwide

The MRG-D5000 Blue Sapphire carries an $80,000 USD price tag, making it the most expensive production watch in the brand’s history. It is also one of the most exclusive models in the collection.

Only 20 examples will be produced globally. Therefore, each piece represents a highly limited combination of sapphire construction, Japanese craftsmanship and G-Shock’s signature shock-resistant design.

The MRG-D5000 Blue Sapphire is available globally through G-Shock in an ultra-limited run of 20 watches.
