OpenAI has introduced a new Apple Messages plugin for ChatGPT on Mac. The integration allows users to search, analyse, draft and send messages through Apple’s Messages app.
The plugin expands ChatGPT beyond conventional writing and research tasks. Users can now connect their message history with other workflows, including calendar-related tasks and follow-up planning. OpenAI announced the feature on August 20, 2026.
ChatGPT Gains Direct Messages Access
The Apple Messages plugin can search conversations and retrieve information from message history. It can also summarise discussions and help users catch up on missed conversations.
Furthermore, ChatGPT can draft and send replies through the Messages application. Users can ask it to suggest follow-ups based on earlier conversations or locate specific information buried in old messages.
The integration also supports iMessage, SMS and RCS conversations stored in Messages on a compatible Mac. Therefore, the feature extends beyond Apple’s proprietary messaging format.
OpenAI has also highlighted several practical workflows. For example, users can ask ChatGPT to check their calendar and suggest suitable times for dinner. They can then use those results to prepare a reply to a contact.
Similarly, ChatGPT can identify birthdays mentioned in conversations and help add them to a calendar. It can also identify potential spam messages and assist with deleting them.
Privacy and User Approval Remain Key Issues
However, the integration raises important privacy questions because Messages can contain highly sensitive personal and professional information. The plugin requires access to message data and macOS permissions that allow it to interact with the Messages application.
OpenAI says the plugin operates locally on the user’s Mac and does not create an index of all messages. However, TechCrunch reported that the precise scope of this local processing was not immediately clear.
Moreover, sending messages involves an approval step by default. OpenAI advises users to retain that confirmation rather than enable persistent approval. This allows users to review a message before ChatGPT sends it.
The permission model therefore matters. Users should understand which conversations ChatGPT can access before connecting the plugin. This is particularly relevant for Macs that contain long histories of personal, family and workplace communications.
The feature also illustrates a broader shift in AI assistants. ChatGPT can now act on information stored inside everyday communication tools, rather than simply generating responses from information users provide manually.
Apple Messages Becomes Part of AI Workflows
The plugin is currently available through the ChatGPT desktop experience for Mac. Reports indicate that it works with ChatGPT Work and Codex on desktop, rather than ordinary ChatGPT conversations.
The integration also requires a compatible Apple Silicon Mac. Consequently, access depends on both the user’s hardware and the ChatGPT surface being used.
Meanwhile, Apple’s existing ChatGPT integration through Apple Intelligence remains separate. Apple supports ChatGPT through Siri and Writing Tools on supported iPhone, iPad and Mac experiences.
The new Messages plugin takes that relationship in a different direction. Instead of asking ChatGPT to help compose text inside Apple’s system tools, users can give ChatGPT access to conversations and related actions.
As a result, the feature could make routine communication tasks faster for users who manage large volumes of messages. At the same time, its wider access to personal conversations makes careful permission management essential.
For OpenAI, the launch represents another step toward action-oriented AI. ChatGPT can increasingly interpret information, make recommendations and perform tasks across connected applications.
