TikTok Explores Peer-to-Peer Payments Through DMs

TikTok is reportedly developing a feature that would let users send money to each other through direct messages. According to Bloomberg, the company is exploring peer-to-peer transfers as it expands further into digital payments.

The feature could allow users to initiate payments directly inside TikTok conversations. However, TikTok has not announced a public launch date, and the service may remain limited to testing.

TikTok Expands Its Payments Strategy

If introduced, the feature would reportedly use TikTok Pay, the platform’s existing payments infrastructure. TikTok Pay already supports TikTok Shop transactions in parts of Southeast Asia.

Therefore, peer-to-peer transfers could extend TikTok’s payment capabilities beyond shopping. Users could potentially send money without leaving the platform or switching to a separate payments application.

TikTok already supports several forms of digital transactions. For example, users can purchase virtual Gifts for creators during livestreams. The company also operates payment systems connected to TikTok Shop.

Moreover, TikTok’s business messaging tools already support direct conversations between companies and users. The company says its Business Messaging API enables real-time communication through integrated platforms.

Payments Could Deepen TikTok’s Ecosystem

The reported move would place TikTok closer to social platforms that combine communication with financial services. Meta, for example, has integrated payment capabilities across parts of its messaging ecosystem.

Meanwhile, X has also expanded into peer-to-peer payments through its X Money service. Its US rollout includes instant transfers between users.

Consequently, TikTok could use payments to keep more activity inside its application. Users might discover content, communicate, shop and transfer money within the same ecosystem.

However, payments also introduce regulatory and security requirements. TikTok would need to address fraud prevention, identity verification, transaction monitoring and regional financial regulations before a broader rollout.

The company has not confirmed the reported feature. Therefore, details about availability, transaction limits, fees and supported markets remain unclear. For now, the reported development signals TikTok’s growing interest in financial services and in-app commerce.
