UAE South Korea strategic cooperation meeting

The United Arab Emirates and South Korea have explored new opportunities to deepen cooperation across energy, nuclear power, artificial intelligence, renewable energy, and emerging technologies. The discussions took place during a meeting in Abu Dhabi between senior officials from both countries under their Special Strategic Partnership framework. Consequently, both sides reaffirmed their commitment to advancing innovation, energy security, and sustainable economic growth.

The meeting brought together Eng. Sharif Al Olama, Undersecretary for Energy and Petroleum Affairs at the UAE Ministry of Energy and Infrastructure, and Kim Jung-kwan, South Korea’s Minister of Trade, Industry and Energy. Moreover, the talks focused on expanding collaboration in strategic sectors that are increasingly important to both nations.

Nuclear Energy Cooperation Remains a Key Focus

Nuclear energy remained a central topic during the discussions. Therefore, both countries examined opportunities to build on the success of the Barakah Nuclear Energy Plant, which stands as one of the most significant achievements in UAE-Korea cooperation.

The two sides also explored potential collaboration in advanced nuclear technologies and Small Modular Reactors (SMRs). In addition, they discussed opportunities to pursue joint projects in international markets by leveraging their experience in nuclear energy development.

The Barakah project continues to serve as a global example of successful international cooperation. As a result, both nations see further opportunities to expand their partnership in the evolving nuclear energy sector.

Expanding Collaboration in AI and Emerging Technologies

Artificial intelligence and advanced technologies also featured prominently in the discussions. Consequently, the UAE and South Korea reviewed ways to strengthen cooperation in digital infrastructure, innovation, and technology-driven economic development.

Both countries recognize the growing role of AI in supporting energy systems, industrial transformation, and future economic competitiveness. Furthermore, they highlighted the importance of technology partnerships that can accelerate research, development, and digital transformation initiatives.
