Firefox Launches AI Window to Challenge Rising AI Browsers

Firefox AI Window feature preview

Firefox is launching an optional AI Window designed to provide a more personalized browsing experience. The browser aims to strengthen its position in a competitive market, and the new feature offers users the choice to continue using Firefox as usual or switch to a private window with integrated AI support. Although the feature is opt-in, users can turn it off at any time, and they can also choose from different AI models.

The AI Window will allow users to chat with an assistant while browsing. Moreover, Firefox says the feature is being developed openly, and a waitlist will grant early access once it becomes available. This launch follows two earlier additions: an AI chatbot in the desktop sidebar and a Shake to Summarize tool on iOS that creates quick webpage summaries.

“While others are building AI experiences that keep you locked in a conversational loop, we see a different path — one where AI serves as a trusted companion, enhancing your browsing experience and guiding you outward to the broader web,” the company said in a blogpost.

Growing Competition Among AI Browsers

The browser market is shifting rapidly due to new AI-driven alternatives. For instance, agentic AI capabilities now allow software to take actions for users, and these changes have begun to challenge long-standing leaders. Perplexity recently released its Comet AI browser for desktop, and it plans to expand to mobile. Additionally, ChatGPT Atlas has launched on Mac and will eventually reach other platforms. As these tools spread, consumer expectations continue to rise.

Firefox enters this race with a long history and a different technical foundation. Since it uses its own Gecko engine rather than the Chromium codebase, it stands apart from browsers like Atlas, Comet, Opera, Samsung Internet and similar products. Consequently, this difference may appeal to users who want a non-Chromium option with integrated AI features.

Chrome Still Leads but Faces Pressure

Even with rising competition, Chrome maintains a commanding lead. According to Similar Web data, it holds 69.33% of the desktop market. Edge follows at 15.48%, while Safari sits at 7.5% and Firefox at 4.84%. Although Chrome remains far ahead, new AI-powered browsers are emerging quickly, and they may gradually shift user preferences. As innovation accelerates, the market continues to evolve, and Firefox aims to strengthen its role in that changing landscape.
