Google Expands Gemini Live to Legacy Devices
Google has expanded Gemini Live to its first-generation Home Mini smart speaker and first-generation Nest Hub smart display, extending its conversational AI experience to some of its oldest smart home devices. Consequently, owners of these legacy products can access more natural, back-and-forth voice conversations without upgrading their hardware. The rollout is part of Google’s Gemini for Home Early Access program and is available to eligible Google Home Premium subscribers.
Previously, Gemini Live supported newer devices such as the Nest Mini, Nest Audio, Nest Hub (2nd generation), Nest Hub Max, and the latest Google Home Speaker. However, Google has now broadened compatibility to include the original Home Mini and Nest Hub, giving older devices access to the same AI-powered assistant experience.
Gemini Live Delivers More Natural Conversations
Unlike the traditional Google Assistant, Gemini Live enables fluid, multi-turn conversations that maintain context throughout an interaction. Therefore, users can ask follow-up questions without repeating previous information, making voice interactions feel more natural and conversational. Google activates the feature with the command, “Hey Google, let’s chat.”
In addition, Google recently increased Gemini’s conversational memory window from 10 minutes to 15 minutes. As a result, the assistant can remember more of an ongoing discussion, allowing users to handle longer requests, brainstorm ideas, or receive step-by-step guidance without restarting the conversation.
Older Devices Receive a Major AI Upgrade
The latest update demonstrates Google’s commitment to extending AI capabilities to existing hardware rather than limiting new features to recently launched products. Moreover, users with compatible first-generation devices can benefit from Gemini Live without purchasing replacement speakers or displays. Google continues to roll out the feature gradually through the Gemini for Home Early Access program.
The expansion also supports Google’s broader transition from Google Assistant to Gemini across its smart home ecosystem. As Gemini becomes the default voice assistant, Google is adding advanced AI features across speakers, displays, cameras, and other connected devices. Consequently, the company is building a more intelligent smart home platform centered on conversational AI.

The rollout reinforces Google’s strategy of integrating Gemini across its consumer devices while improving the longevity of older products.
