WhatsApp has introduced voice and video calling directly on WhatsApp Web, allowing users to make and receive calls without downloading the desktop application. The rollout began on July 28 and brings the browser version much closer to the capabilities of the mobile and desktop apps.
Browser Calling Arrives With Full Features
“You can now make and receive audio and video calls, both one-on-one and group, directly from WhatsApp Web. No app download required,” WhatsApp said in an official blog post announcing the update.
Moreover, the company said all calls remain end-to-end encrypted, free, and have no time limits. The feature works across Chrome, Edge, Safari, and Firefox, making it widely accessible.
In addition, users now get a dedicated Calls tab that includes call history and favorite contacts. They can also use screen sharing and in-call reactions, while group video calls support up to 32 participants.
New Calling Tools Improve User Experience
Alongside browser-based calling, WhatsApp has introduced several new communication features. For example, Call Transfer lets users move an ongoing call between their phone and desktop without disconnecting.
Meanwhile, the new Waiting Room feature gives hosts more control over group calls by allowing them to approve participants before they join through a shared call link.
Furthermore, QuickHD improves video quality within the first few seconds of a call, reducing the delay users often experience at the beginning of conversations. At the same time, Noise Suppression filters background sounds in real time, helping voices remain clear even in noisy environments. Users can enable or disable this feature directly from the in-call settings.
Update Closes a Long-Standing Feature Gap
Previously, WhatsApp Web did not support voice or video calling, and users had to install the desktop application for those features. However, development reports earlier this year suggested browser-based calling was on the way.
Now, the broader rollout is reaching users worldwide. As a result, WhatsApp Web offers a more complete communication experience while reducing the need for additional software on desktop devices.
