Threads Tests New Algorithm Control Tools for Customised User Feeds

Threads algorithm tagging feature demo

Threads is working on a new feature that would allow users to directly influence their feeds by tagging an account. According to early findings, the tool would let people indicate what they want to see more or less of in their feed. Although the product is still in development, an Instagram account linked to the feature has already gone live and is followed by several engineers.

This approach is similar to ideas proposed for other platforms, including X, where users may soon tag its AI chatbot to adjust feeds in real time. By contrast, Threads could deliver a simpler way to let users guide their recommendations more naturally while browsing.

Part of a Larger Push by Instagram

The experiment aligns with Instagram’s broader efforts to give users more control over algorithms. Recently, Instagram confirmed plans to let people choose which topics appear more or less in their feeds. This builds on earlier attempts like alternative feeds introduced in 2022 and the option to switch between Following and For You feeds on Threads in 2023.

Additionally, Instagram head Adam Mosseri demonstrated how users could select or block suggested topics with a new interface. This development is aimed at making the platform more adaptable to changes in user moods and interests, whether it’s sports, entertainment, or lifestyle.

Shifting Landscape of Social Platforms

These experiments reflect a broader industry shift, especially as lawmakers question the influence of algorithms on younger users. Newer platforms such as Bluesky already allow individuals to select their preferred moderation tools and recommendation systems.

Threads, designed for fast-moving posts and replies, may not suit frequent deep settings changes. Instead, a real-time tagging system could make adjustments seamless. While Instagram also prepares a makeover that emphasises Reels, direct messages, and recommendations, there is no official word yet on when or if Threads’ tagging tool will be released publicly.
