OpenAI has introduced Dreaming V3, a redesigned memory architecture for ChatGPT that automatically updates and organizes user context behind the scenes. As a result, the system replaces the previous memory approach, which relied on manually saved information and could become outdated over time.
The new feature is now available to Plus and Pro subscribers in the United States. Meanwhile, OpenAI plans to expand access to Free and Go users over the coming weeks.
Dreaming V3 marks the third generation of the company’s memory technology. While earlier versions helped ChatGPT reference past conversations, the latest architecture works more efficiently and can function as the platform’s primary memory system.
According to OpenAI, the system evaluates memories based on three key principles. First, it preserves useful context from previous conversations. Second, it follows user preferences and constraints. Third, it keeps information current as situations change.
For instance, if a user returns home after visiting Singapore, the system updates its understanding accordingly. Consequently, it stops suggesting restaurants in Singapore and resumes recommending locations closer to the user’s current environment.
Users can also review, edit, or add personal context through a dedicated memory summary page. Additionally, they can create topic-specific triggers that determine when certain information should appear during conversations.
Lower Costs Support Wider Rollout
A major factor behind the broader deployment is a significant reduction in computing costs. According to OpenAI, the company lowered the cost of operating the memory system for free-tier users by roughly five times.
Because of this efficiency improvement, OpenAI can extend the feature beyond paying subscribers. Furthermore, the rollout targets a user base that now exceeds 200 million monthly active users.
Building a More Personalized AI Assistant
The Dreaming V3 release arrives as OpenAI continues to expand ChatGPT’s personalization capabilities. Earlier this year, the company introduced a personal finance experience for Pro users that connects bank accounts through Plaid. In addition, it launched memory upgrades that improved retrieval from past chats, saved memories, and connected files.
The introduction of Dreaming V3 signals a broader shift in strategy. Rather than treating memory as a supporting feature, OpenAI now positions it as a core part of the ChatGPT experience. As competition intensifies among AI assistant providers, the company aims to deliver more personalized and long-term interactions for users.
