Nvidia has held discussions to acquire AI platform Hugging Face in a transaction that could value the company at more than $13 billion. The talks reportedly took place in recent weeks, although the two companies had not publicly confirmed an agreement at the time of the initial reports.
However, separate reporting later indicated that Nvidia had agreed to acquire Hugging Face for $12.9 billion. Neither company has publicly confirmed the transaction, creating a discrepancy between the reported valuation and the deal’s status.
The potential transaction would rank among Nvidia’s largest acquisitions. Moreover, it would expand the chipmaker’s reach from AI hardware into one of the industry’s most important open-source software platforms.
Hugging Face Strengthens Nvidia’s AI Position
Hugging Face operates a major platform where developers and researchers share, discover and deploy AI models and datasets. Consequently, acquiring the company could give Nvidia deeper access to the developers building applications across the open-source AI ecosystem.
The platform supports models and technologies from multiple hardware providers. Therefore, Nvidia’s ownership could also raise questions about its neutrality, particularly because developers can access technologies from competitors such as AMD and Intel.
Nvidia already has a relationship with Hugging Face. The chipmaker participated in the company’s $235 million funding round in 2023, which valued Hugging Face at $4.5 billion.
Furthermore, Hugging Face reportedly rejected a $500 million investment proposal from Nvidia last year. That offer would have valued the company at about $7 billion, and the startup reportedly had concerns about giving a dominant investor too much influence.
AI Infrastructure Becomes the Next Battleground
The reported talks come as Nvidia expands its investment activity across the AI industry. The company said it had $18 billion committed to equity investments through fiscal 2027, alongside $47.9 billion already held in private companies.
Meanwhile, demand for open-source AI continues to grow. Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang recently said, “The world will need both closed models and open models,” while noting that both categories are seeing rapid adoption.
Hugging Face also brings a large developer ecosystem and extensive model library. As a result, Nvidia could strengthen its position across the software layer connecting developers to AI infrastructure.
Still, the reported transaction faces important questions. The final price, deal structure, governance arrangements and Hugging Face’s continued support for competing hardware remain unclear.
Ultimately, the potential acquisition would show how strategic AI platforms have become as the industry moves beyond chips and foundation models. For Nvidia, Hugging Face could provide a direct route into the open-source developer ecosystem while extending its influence across the broader AI stack.
