OpenAI to Launch AI Smart Speaker With Cameras and ChatGPT in 2027

OpenAI AI smart speaker concept

OpenAI is preparing to enter the consumer hardware market with a portable, screenless smart speaker designed to act as an AI companion inside the home. According to a recent report, the device will feature cameras, environmental sensors, and movable components. As a result, it marks the company’s first physical product and positions it against major smart home brands.

AI Companion Designed for Everyday Use

OpenAI reportedly remains on track to unveil the device in 2026 before releasing it in 2027. Furthermore, the company is developing the speaker with former Apple design chief Jony Ive after acquiring his hardware startup in a deal valued at around $6.5 billion. More than 200 employees are currently working on the company’s hardware projects.

The speaker is expected to cost between $200 and $300 and aims to bring ChatGPT into homes through a dedicated device. Unlike traditional smart speakers, it will include a built-in camera that can observe its surroundings, identify objects, and recognize nearby conversations. In addition, a facial recognition system similar to Apple’s Face ID will allow users to authenticate purchases securely.

OpenAI Expands Into Smart Home Hardware

The upcoming speaker will compete with products such as Amazon Echo and Apple HomePod. However, OpenAI believes its advances in large language models will provide a more capable AI experience than conventional voice assistants.

Rather than replacing smartphones or laptops, the company envisions the speaker as an always-on AI companion that supports everyday tasks through hands-free interaction. Consequently, the device represents a new category of personal computing focused on seamless AI assistance within the home.

Broader Hardware Roadmap

Beyond the smart speaker, OpenAI is also developing AI-powered smart glasses. However, mass production is not expected before 2028. Meanwhile, the company has created a smart lamp prototype, although it may not reach commercial production.

Additionally, the company continues to target a hardware unveiling in the second half of 2026. The latest report also indicates that this timeline remains unchanged despite Apple’s ongoing trade secret theft lawsuit against the company.
