Google has expanded its AI-powered “multi-search” feature, which allows for combined text and image searching, to be accessible to users worldwide on mobile devices in regions where Google Lens is already available. This search functionality, which was initially launched in April, aims to modernize Google search and make the most of the capabilities of smartphones.
In the coming months, the company plans to roll out “multi-search near me,” a variation that focuses on local businesses, as well as multi-search for the web and a new Lens feature for Android users.
The technology behind multi-search, known as the Multitask Unified Model (MUM), is capable of understanding and interpreting information in a range of formats, such as text, photos, and videos, and making connections between related topics, concepts, and ideas.
