Apple Releases iOS 26.5 Security Update

Apple iOS 26.5 software update

Apple on Monday released iOS 26.5 for iPhone 11 and newer devices. The update introduces beta support for end-to-end encrypted RCS messaging between iPhone and Android users. Apple added the feature after the GSM Association expanded the RCS Universal Profile 3.0 standard in 2025 to support encryption.

Encrypted RCS conversations now display a lock icon inside the Messages app. In addition, the feature activates automatically on supported carriers and will continue rolling out gradually across regions and networks.

The update also introduces Suggested Places in Apple Maps, which recommends locations based on nearby activity and recent searches. Meanwhile, Apple added a new Pride Luminance wallpaper across supported devices.

Alongside iOS 26.5, Apple released updates for iPadOS, macOS Tahoe, watchOS, tvOS, and visionOS. These releases include fixes for memory corruption, sandbox escape vulnerabilities, and kernel security flaws.

Older Apple Devices Receive Security Updates

Apple simultaneously issued security updates for older operating systems to extend protection across legacy devices. The releases include iOS 18.7.9, iOS 16.7.16, and iOS 15.8.8, as well as multiple iPadOS and macOS updates.

The company confirmed that iOS and iPadOS 15.8.8 include a patch for CVE-2026-28950, a notification privacy vulnerability previously fixed in iOS 26.4.2. That flaw allowed deleted notification content to remain inside system logs, potentially exposing information to malware or forensic tools.

Furthermore, Apple released updates for macOS Sequoia and macOS Sonoma to strengthen protection for unsupported hardware generations that cannot upgrade to the latest operating systems.

Apple Continues Aggressive Security Push

The coordinated software rollout reflects Apple’s broader strategy of rapidly addressing security vulnerabilities across its ecosystem. Earlier this year, the company patched CVE-2026-20700, an actively exploited zero-day vulnerability tied to its dyld component.

That update resolved dozens of additional vulnerabilities affecting WebKit, CloudKit, and kernel-level processes. Moreover, Apple recently introduced its Background Security Improvements mechanism, which allows smaller security patches to reach devices between major software releases.

The latest updates continue Apple’s effort to strengthen platform security while expanding feature parity across newer and older devices.
