Perplexity has launched Hybrid Compute for its Mac application, bringing local processing into its AI agent workflows.
The system combines cloud-based AI with models running directly on a Mac. Therefore, Perplexity Computer can handle demanding reasoning in the cloud while processing sensitive information locally.
Cloud AI Meets Local Processing
Hybrid Compute starts tasks in the cloud, where Perplexity Computer handles search, planning and reasoning. However, the system can shift individual steps to a local model when they involve private files or sensitive information.
For example, a user can start a task from an iPhone while the Mac accesses relevant local files. The Mac then performs sensitive processing locally instead of sending that information to Perplexity’s servers.
Perplexity says Computer combines the cloud and local results into one response. As a result, users can retain cloud AI capabilities while keeping selected information on their devices.
The approach also extends Perplexity’s recent focus on local-first AI. In August, the company introduced Portable Computer, which can run Computer entirely on-device with NVIDIA hardware.
On-Device Privacy Gate Controls Data
Privacy remains central to the new system. Before sensitive information leaves the Mac, an on-device personally identifiable information classifier examines the relevant task.
The classifier can identify information such as names, addresses and account numbers. It can then replace those details with stand-ins before information reaches the cloud. When the response returns, the system restores the original information.
Moreover, Perplexity has open-sourced the on-device PII classifier. The company developed it in collaboration with its Secure Intelligence Institute.
Users also retain control over how individual steps are handled. According to Perplexity, they can run a step locally, send the file to the cloud or skip the step entirely.
The design targets tasks involving highly sensitive material. These could include private documents, financial records and other files that users may prefer to keep off remote servers.
Mac Requirements and Availability
Hybrid Compute is available through the Perplexity Mac application for Pro, Max and Enterprise subscribers. It requires Apple silicon and macOS 15 or later.
However, memory requirements limit availability on older or lower-memory Macs. Perplexity lists 24GB of unified memory as the minimum, while 32GB provides the recommended configuration.
Users can install the local model directly through the application. Perplexity says the setup requires no Ollama installation, manual runtime configuration or API key.
The company also says local processing does not consume cloud credits. Consequently, Hybrid Compute could make local execution more practical for users who regularly work with private material.
The launch adds another layer to Perplexity’s broader push toward agentic computing. Instead of sending every part of an AI workflow to the cloud, the company is building systems that can decide where each step should run.
That architecture could become increasingly important as AI agents gain access to personal and professional files. For now, Perplexity’s Mac launch offers a direct test of whether cloud intelligence and local privacy can operate within the same workflow.
