Amazon is shifting direction after one of its largest workforce reductions, and it now plans to hire about 11,000 software developers and interns in 2026. This move follows roughly 30,000 job cuts, so it signals a strategic adjustment rather than a simple reversal. Moreover, demand for technical talent continues to rise, which supports the renewed hiring push.
Earlier, the company reduced its workforce in two phases, with about 14,000 layoffs in late 2025 and another 16,000 in early 2026. These cuts affected several divisions, including AWS, Prime Video, retail, and human resources. Additionally, leadership aimed to streamline operations by removing layers and reducing bureaucracy. As a result, the current hiring plan reflects a recalibration focused on efficiency and specialized talent.
Expanding AI Tools and Strategy
At the same event, the company introduced new AI-driven tools, and these products highlight its evolving approach to workforce management. For example, Connect Talent automates recruitment by identifying, screening, and interviewing candidates continuously. It also uses adaptive voice questioning, while it generates evaluation scores and transcripts for recruiters. However, human decision-makers still retain final authority in hiring outcomes.
In addition, the company launched Connect Decisions, which supports supply chain planning through AI-based data analysis. This tool helps businesses manage procurement and logistics more effectively. Both tools align with a broader design philosophy called “humorphism,” which aims to adapt technology to human workflows. Consequently, AI is positioned as a collaborator rather than a replacement for workers.

Despite concerns, the idea that AI is significantly reducing developer roles remains contested. Instead, projections indicate continued growth in tech employment, which suggests ongoing demand for skilled workers. At the same time, some layoffs have been linked to efficiency gains driven by AI.
