OpenAI Expands ChatGPT Plugins With Automations
OpenAI is expanding ChatGPT plugins with dedicated interfaces, interactive panels, and event-driven automations.
The update allows developers to build richer experiences directly inside ChatGPT. Previously, plugins mainly connected the chatbot with external services and workflows. Now, developers can create more complete app-like experiences within the conversation.
ChatGPT Plugins Get Dedicated Interfaces
The new plugin extensions give connected apps a dedicated home in ChatGPT’s sidebar. Moreover, developers can create interactive panels that allow users to work with an application while continuing their conversation.
Plugins can also include file viewers for formats supported by the connected service. Consequently, users can access and work with more application content without leaving ChatGPT.
OpenAI is also introducing Plugin Creator to simplify development. In addition, a redesigned submission process will provide developers with clearer feedback when they publish plugins.
Meanwhile, OpenAI has changed how plugins appear in its directory and conversations. Improved rankings and recommendations should help users discover relevant tools more easily. Users can also approve plugin access permissions individually.
Sites Can Host ChatGPT Plugins
OpenAI is extending plugins to ChatGPT Sites as well. As a result, developers and teams can embed supported plugins into websites created with ChatGPT.
This setup can allow colleagues to use the same application with their own connected data and permissions. Therefore, ChatGPT Sites can serve as a shared environment for AI-powered applications and workflows.
The move also expands OpenAI’s broader strategy of making ChatGPT a platform for third-party experiences. OpenAI said developers can now launch native experiences through ChatGPT, which the company describes as a shared surface for people and agents.
Event-Driven Automations Add New Capabilities
OpenAI is also adding support for the proposed MCP Events specification. This will allow eligible plugins to trigger automations when specific events occur in connected applications.
For example, a plugin could watch a project board for a new task. When a matching event occurs, ChatGPT could retrieve related documents and prepare a plan.
Furthermore, OpenAI says it is making automatiitto add and manage. The change moves plugins beyond simple conversational assistance toward workflows that can respond to events and continue working with connected services.
The company says these plugin capabilities are available across all plans, although individual features and connected applications can have separate availability requirements.
