Microsoft has introduced Project Zenith, a new Windows experience designed to give developers a ready-to-code environment.
Project Zenith targets developer-class devices with at least 64 GB of unified memory. These systems also offer 250+ GB/s of memory bandwidth. Consequently, Microsoft aims to support demanding local AI workloads alongside software development.
Project Zenith focuses on developer workflows
Project Zenith comes with Windows preconfigured for software development. In addition, Microsoft plans to include tools that developers commonly use for coding and productivity.
Windows Terminal and Visual Studio Code will appear on the taskbar by default. Meanwhile, File Explorer will show file extensions, hidden files, full paths, and the details pane.
Microsoft will also enable long-path support. At the same time, it will disable recently used files and folders and sync-provider tips.
Furthermore, Start menu tips and account notifications will remain off. Command Palette will also be enabled in Search and Start. These changes aim to create a cleaner working environment with fewer interruptions.
Project Zenith also includes development tools such as GitHub Copilot, PowerToys, WinAppCLI, and Windows Dev Skills, according to reports detailing the configuration.
Microsoft also continues to expand Windows Subsystem for Linux. The company integrated WSL containers into Windows following its Build 2026 announcements. Therefore, developers can work with Linux containers directly within Windows.
Local AI is a major focus
Project Zenith also targets the growing demand for local AI development. Microsoft says qualifying devices can run models with more than 30 billion parameters locally without metered usage.
Logan Iyer, Corporate Vice President of Windows Platform and Developer at Microsoft, said: “Project Zenith devices come with a preconfigured Windows setup for development and a set of tools curated for what developers reach for first. On these devices, developers can run 30B+ parameter models locally and unmetered – accelerating experimentation while helping reduce reliance on metered cloud tokens.”
The hardware requirements therefore support Microsoft’s broader push toward on-device AI. Developers can handle some workloads locally while reserving cloud-based frontier models for more demanding tasks.
Additionally, Project Zenith builds on Microsoft’s work around secure agent development. The company says these devices will benefit from OS-enforced identity, Microsoft Execution Containers, and enterprise management capabilities for agents.
AMD leads the initial rollout
Project Zenith will initially arrive on devices using AMD’s Ryzen AI Halo platform. However, Microsoft says additional devices from its OEM and silicon partners will follow in the coming months.
The company also positions Zenith as a starting point rather than a fixed workflow. Developers can continue to customize Windows around their preferred languages, frameworks, and tools.
Meanwhile, Microsoft is continuing broader Windows 11 improvements across performance, reliability, Search, File Explorer, and memory usage. Project Zenith brings those changes together with a developer-focused configuration.
Iyer said: “Project Zenith is the result of listening to developers about what they need from Windows today, and where they want the platform to go next,” according to Microsoft’s announcement.
As a result, Project Zenith gives Microsoft a more focused way to position Windows for modern development, particularly as local AI and software agents become increasingly important.
