OpenAI Launches ChatGPT Work with GPT-5.6

OpenAI GPT-5.6 ChatGPT productivity features

OpenAI has introduced ChatGPT Work, a new AI agent designed to automate complex workplace tasks, alongside the public rollout of its GPT-5.6 model family. The launch marks a significant expansion of ChatGPT from a conversational assistant into a productivity platform capable of handling multi-step business workflows. Consequently, professionals can use a single interface to create documents, build presentations, write code, analyze data, and automate routine office tasks.

At the same time, OpenAI has begun rolling out GPT-5.6 to ChatGPT, Codex, and API users. The new model family includes Sol, Terra, and Luna, offering different performance levels for reasoning, coding, scientific research, cybersecurity, and enterprise applications. Moreover, GPT-5.6 delivers stronger intelligence, better efficiency, and improved performance per dollar compared with earlier models.

ChatGPT Work Automates Business Tasks

ChatGPT Work combines ChatGPT’s conversational capabilities with Codex’s software development tools to create an AI agent that can complete complex assignments across connected business applications. Therefore, users can generate reports, spreadsheets, presentations, websites, and software projects without switching between multiple tools.

The platform also integrates with workplace services such as Slack, Gmail, Google Drive, and customer relationship management systems. In addition, ChatGPT Work supports long-running tasks that require planning, reasoning, coding, and document generation while keeping users informed throughout the process.

OpenAI initially released ChatGPT Work for Pro, Enterprise, and Edu customers through the desktop application. However, the company plans to expand availability to Plus and Business subscribers in the coming days. Developers will also gain access through OpenAI’s broader enterprise ecosystem.

GPT-5.6 Improves Enterprise Performance

GPT-5.6 introduces major improvements in reasoning, coding, knowledge work, and tool use. Therefore, organizations can tackle more demanding workflows while reducing operating costs through better efficiency. OpenAI says the model scales intelligence based on workload, allowing users to balance speed and performance according to their needs.

The model family includes three variants. Sol serves as the flagship reasoning model, Terra focuses on balanced enterprise performance, and Luna delivers lower-cost inference for high-volume workloads. Furthermore, OpenAI says even the smaller models can achieve performance comparable to larger systems in many business scenarios while consuming fewer computing resources.

Enterprise AI Competition Accelerates

The launch arrives as competition intensifies among AI companies developing workplace automation platforms. Consequently, OpenAI is positioning ChatGPT Work against enterprise AI agents from rivals including Anthropic, Google, and Microsoft. The company believes businesses increasingly want AI systems that complete tasks instead of simply answering questions.

With ChatGPT Work and GPT-5.6, OpenAI is expanding its enterprise strategy beyond conversational AI. As organizations continue adopting agentic workflows, integrated AI platforms that combine reasoning, coding, automation, and productivity tools are expected to become central to everyday business operations.
