Abu Dhabi Police Warn of Rising Remote Control App Fraud Risks

Remote control app scam warning

As part of its ‘Be Aware’ campaign, Abu Dhabi Police has highlighted the increasing risks linked to remote control applications. Specifically, these apps, used on smartphones and computers, have become tools that fraudsters exploit to steal money and sensitive personal data.

Although these applications serve legitimate purposes such as technical support and remote work, scammers increasingly misuse them. For instance, they often trick individuals into downloading such apps by pretending to offer assistance. As a result, they gain full control of the device without the user’s awareness.

Consequently, victims may unknowingly expose confidential information, which criminals can then use for financial fraud or identity theft.

How Scammers Operate and What to Avoid

Furthermore, authorities warn against responding to suspicious or unknown calls that request app installations or sensitive details. In particular, fraudsters may pose as representatives from trusted institutions to appear credible.

However, officials stress that legitimate bank employees or authorities never request account details, credit card numbers, passwords, PINs, or one-time passwords. Therefore, any such request should immediately raise concern.

At the same time, individuals should remain cautious and avoid sharing personal or financial information under any circumstances. By doing so, they can significantly reduce the risk of falling victim to scams.

Safety Measures and Reporting Steps

In addition, authorities recommend downloading remote control applications only from official and trusted platforms. Moreover, users should carefully review app permissions before installation to prevent unauthorized access.

Equally important, individuals should use reliable security software, enable device protections, and keep systems regularly updated. These steps, in turn, help reduce exposure to cyber threats.

If any suspicious activity or fraud attempt occurs, the public should report it immediately. For example, individuals can contact ‘Aman’ at 8002626, send a message to 2828, or visit the nearest police station.

Ultimately, these measures form part of broader efforts to combat cybercrime, raise awareness, and protect the community from evolving digital risks.
