Tesla to Unveil Terafab Chip Factory Project on Friday

Tesla is preparing to launch its Terafab project on March 21, marking a major step into semiconductor manufacturing. Notably, CEO Elon Musk announced the initiative earlier, which quickly sparked widespread industry attention. As a result, analysts are closely watching whether the company can handle such a complex manufacturing challenge.

Furthermore, the facility will likely be built near Tesla’s Gigafactory in Austin, Texas. It aims to produce advanced 2-nanometer chips with an initial capacity of 100,000 wafer starts per month. These chips will power Full Self-Driving systems, the Cybercab robotaxi, and the Optimus humanoid robot line.

High Costs and Strategic Necessity

However, the project comes with significant financial and operational demands. Analysts estimate costs could range from $25 billion to $40 billion, which raises concerns given Tesla’s recent cash flow levels. Even so, the company has already started hiring key talent to support development.

Meanwhile, early production is unlikely before mid-2028, even under an aggressive timeline. Despite these challenges, Musk has emphasized the urgency behind the project. He warned of a looming AI compute shortage that could impact Tesla’s long-term goals.

“Even if we predict the most favorable outcomes for chip production from our current suppliers, it’s still insufficient,” Musk said at last year’s annual shareholder meeting, according to Reuters. He added that a U.S.-based facility would also guard against “geopolitical risks” tied to the company’s current reliance on TSMC in Taiwan and Samsung in South Korea.

Industry Challenges and Long-Term Impact

At the same time, experts highlight several obstacles beyond cost. For instance, semiconductor equipment shortages and long wait times for advanced lithography machines could slow progress. Additionally, Tesla lacks prior experience in running a chip fabrication facility.

Nevertheless, the company continues to rely on existing partners for current chip production while developing its in-house capabilities. Looking ahead, Tesla’s long-term ambitions could significantly increase chip demand. For example, scaling production of humanoid robots may require hundreds of millions of chips annually.

Ultimately, the Terafab project reflects a bold push toward vertical integration. Therefore, if successful, it could reshape Tesla’s role in both AI and semiconductor industries while setting new benchmarks for manufacturing innovation.
