UAE Cyber Security Council warns 79% of travellers risk data theft

A recent warning highlights that nearly eight in ten travellers unknowingly expose their personal data when they use untrusted public charging ports. This growing threat, often referred to as “juice jacking,” relies on unsecured connections that can transfer malicious software to mobile devices. Although many travellers use these stations for convenience, attackers may exploit them to access files or install harmful programmes through automatically activated transfer protocols. Because of this risk, ignoring basic precautions can result in password theft, data loss, and hidden spyware installation.

The issue extends beyond individual users, and it also affects businesses. Recent findings indicate that 68 per cent of companies have faced attacks linked to unsafe charging points, leading to data breaches and disruptions across digital systems. As these incidents increase, travellers and organisations must pay closer attention to how and where devices are powered. Warning signs of a compromised device include rapid battery drain, slow app performance, repeated crashes, and unfamiliar on-screen messages.

Essential Precautions for Travellers

To reduce exposure, travellers are urged to rely on personal chargers instead of public stations. This simple habit greatly lowers the risk of unwanted data transfer. Additionally, users should always reject transfer requests when connecting to unknown power sources, since those prompts may indicate an attempted intrusion. Enabling two-factor authentication, using biometric logins, and reviewing app permissions further strengthens device protection. These steps help prevent unnecessary access to photos, messages, or contacts, and they also limit the impact of any attempted data theft.

The guidance also stresses caution when downloading mobile applications. Even legitimate-looking apps may contain malicious code, and attackers can use this to spy on users or steal financial information. Because cyber threats evolve quickly, maintaining awareness and adopting secure habits remain crucial.

Strengthening Digital Safety Through Awareness

The message forms part of a weekly initiative designed to promote safe digital behaviour. Through consistent guidance, the campaign aims to improve public understanding of modern cyber risks and encourage stronger security habits across society. As digital activity expands and new threats emerge, the programme supports efforts to enhance national cybersecurity resilience and protect user privacy. Ultimately, raising awareness helps build trust in the digital economy and ensures that travellers stay safer during daily and international journeys.
