Meta Launches Smart Glasses with Built-in Display

Meta Ray-Ban Display smart glasses with wristband

Meta launched a consumer-ready Ray-Ban Display with a built-in lens display and a wristband controller. Moreover, the device aims to extend the Ray-Ban smart-glasses line into a display-equipped product category. The Display will cost $799 and reach stores on September 30, while an Oakley Vanguard sports model will follow on October 21. Meanwhile, updated Ray-Ban models without an in-lens display now offer longer battery life and an improved camera.

Features and availability

The Ray-Ban Display places a small digital screen in the right lens for notifications and basic tasks, and it ships with a wristband that maps hand gestures to commands. Additionally, Oakley Vanguard targets athletes with fitness integrations, nine hours of battery life, and links to training platforms. The refreshed non-display Ray-Ban option retails at $379, and the Oakley Vanguard starts at $499. The Display family supports livestreaming, cameras, hands-free control, and an on-device AI assistant.

Market context and outlook

However, initial demos encountered technical hiccups during the announcement, which underlines the software work that remains ahead. Industry analysts expect this product to be an incremental step rather than an immediate blockbuster, yet it could help lay the groundwork for more advanced AR eyewear planned in later years.

Furthermore, broader forecasts project rising shipments of AR/VR headsets and display-less smart glasses next year, with cheaper, camera-equipped models driving demand. Finally, despite scrutiny over platform safety and other regulatory concerns, the new hardware marks a clear push to make glasses a mainstream AI companion.
