Ali Al Hashemi Becomes Emirati Head of Global Satellite Association

Ali Al Hashemi elected GSOA chairman

Ali Al Hashemi, CEO of Space Services at Space42, has been elected Chairman of the Board of the Global Satellite Operators Association (GSOA). This makes him the first Emirati to hold the position, reflecting the UAE’s growing influence in the global space sector.

Al Hashemi brings more than 20 years of experience across telecommunications, defence, and aerospace. He previously served as Vice Chair of GSOA since 2023 and has led projects such as the Thuraya-4 satellite launch and the expansion of direct-to-device services in Africa. In addition, he chairs AMMROC and sits on the boards of the UAE Space Agency and the National Space Science and Technology Centre. Earlier, as Group CEO of Yahsat, he oversaw its 2021 IPO on the Abu Dhabi Securities Exchange and managed the integration of Thuraya.

Recognised internationally, he has been listed in Forbes Middle East’s Top 100 CEOs in both 2023 and 2024 and was named a Sustainability Leader in 2023.

Building a Global Platform

Joining Al Hashemi in the new leadership team are Adel Al-Saleh, CEO of SES, and Jane Nkechi Egerton-Idehen, CEO of NigComSat, who will serve as Vice Chairs. Their combined expertise brings perspectives from Europe, Africa, and the Middle East.

GSOA is the only global non-profit body representing the full satellite ecosystem, including geostationary and non-geostationary operators, earth observation, launchers, and manufacturers. With nearly 70 members, it is recognised by global regulators and organisations such as the ITU and World Economic Forum as the sector’s leading voice.

Expanding the UAE’s Role in Space

The UAE has steadily strengthened its position in space and satellite communications. Through Space42, it has invested in next-generation satellite systems, direct-to-device technologies, and international partnerships. The country also continues to develop research and training initiatives to prepare local talent for future roles in aerospace and space science.

Beyond communications, the UAE is known for ambitious projects such as the Hope Probe to Mars and its astronaut programme, which has completed long-duration International Space Station missions. Al Hashemi’s election builds on this momentum, placing the UAE at the centre of global dialogue on satellite communications and reinforcing its credibility as a trusted partner in the global space industry.
