Gemini Surpasses ChatGPT and Grok with Nano Banana Boost on App Store

Google Gemini app tops chart

Google Gemini has surged to the top of the Apple App Store’s free apps chart in both India and the US, overtaking rivals like ChatGPT and Grok. Demis Hassabis, CEO of Google DeepMind, congratulated the Gemini team on social media and said this was “just the start.”

The rise comes after the launch of the “Nano Banana” image editing tool in August. The feature has gone viral, driving social media trends much like the earlier Ghibli Studio trend that boosted ChatGPT’s popularity during the summer. Users are now transforming their photos into hyper-realistic 3D figurines, complete with acrylic bases and packaging, by uploading and prompting the Gemini app.

This trend has captivated both public figures and everyday users. In India, politicians and celebrities have joined in, further amplifying Gemini’s reach. Millions of images have already been generated, showing how quickly a viral feature can fuel widespread adoption.

Competition Among Chatbots Intensifies

Gemini’s momentum highlights the intense rivalry in the chatbot market. While ChatGPT has built a massive global user base, Gemini leverages strengths such as native multimodality and integration within Google’s ecosystem. As a result, it appeals to users seeking seamless experiences across different platforms.

The surge also reflects shifting user preferences, with viral creativity tools offering a competitive edge. Engagement levels have soared as Gemini combines technical capabilities with entertainment-driven features that encourage repeat use. This strategy has given it an upper hand in short-term growth and visibility.

Rising Amid Controversy Over Rankings

Gemini’s ascent coincides with renewed criticism from Elon Musk, who alleged that Grok was deliberately kept from reaching top positions. In August, he even filed a lawsuit against Apple, claiming that its practices favored certain apps over competitors. However, soon after these accusations, several AI apps including Gemini rose to the top of the rankings.

The timing of this surge appears to undercut Musk’s claims of bias. Instead, it highlights how user-driven trends can outweigh external disputes in shaping app success. For Gemini, the Nano Banana tool has transformed into a cultural phenomenon that not only attracts downloads but also strengthens its position in the broader AI race.
